Notes

Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908-1973), the 36th President of the United States, served in the U.S. Congressional House and Senate before assuming the presidential office in the wake of President John F. Kennedy's assassination in 1963. Johnson was elected in his own right in 1964 with the widest popular margin in American history. As President, he enacted civil rights legislation; introduced "The Great Society", a domestic program that established Medicare and Medicaid; and escalated the Vietnam War. The troop escalation cost him his popularity and he elected not to run for office again in 1968.
