Dr. Samuel B. Pryor, Early Prominent Dallas County Resident
privates.67 The roster list of 22 February 1861 sent to the State of Texas listed Samuel B. Pryor as 1st
Lieutenant. Charles R. Pryor was not listed.68 Today a fine marker marks John J. Good's final resting
place in the same cemetery where Samuel P. Pryor is buried.
This research gave me more insight, if not complete, into the life of Samuel B. Pryor and the history he
was part of. He and his brother, without doubt, along with countless other prominent pioneers
contributed a great deal to Dallas' early development, both personal and political.

Heather Mitchell located this information and contacted the archives for additional information. Ms. Mary Laura
Kludy, VMI Archives Assistant, replied via e-mail message to Mrs. Mitchell who forwarded a copy to the author, 8
December 1999. According to Ms. Kludy, a historian, Joseph R. Anderson, in 1910 requested that every cadet up to
that time send in information about their family history, their war record, and their careers to be put in the files. The
small amount of information on Dr. Pryor came from a 1911 letter written to Mr. Anderson from Mrs. M. P.
Callhun, apparently a distant relative who knew very little about Pryor, but filled in what she could. The dates of
when he entered VMI and when and why he left are part of the school's official records.
