PLEASANT VALLEY TRAGEDY
NO NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN THE GARRISON-JONES KILLING OF YESTERDAYWHAT THE INQUEST DEVELOPED
Testimony of Different Witnesses and
Verdict of the Coroner-Funeral
Attended by Large Crowd
Garland, Tex., June 28.- There have been no
new developments in the Garrison-Jones
tragedy, enacted at Pleasant Valley yesterday.
The two dead men, Frank Jones and Gus
Garrison, were buried to-day, the largest crowd
ever assembled at the cemetery being present.
The grief manifested by the families of the two
boys was touching to the most hardened heart,
and there was hardly a dry eye in the entire
crowd. It was a sad scene, and the unusual
circumstances of their deaths made it doubly so.
'Squire Swim went over yesterday
afternoon and held the inquest, taking the
testimony of several witnesses to the affair:
C. M. McCollum - I was out in front of
the Methodist church at Pleasant Valley this
morning when the shooting occurred. I was
hunkered down. Tom Jones by my side, on the
right hand side of the door. The church fronts
west. Frank Jones was hunkered down, leaning
against the southwest corner of the churchhouse.
I saw Gus Garrison come up as though he was
going into the house. The he turned toward
Frank Jones and said: "Frank, you G-d-s--,"
then put his hand on his hip pocket pulled his
pistol and went to shooting. Gus shot Frank
three times. I could not tell whether Frank did
or did not make an effort to shoot. I did not seeFrank have a pistol at that time. I saw a pistol
taken off of Frank after he was killed. About
the time Gus began shooting at Frank, Tom
Jones, brother of Frank, began shooting at Gus,
who fell. I saw after the shooting was over that
Tom Jones was shot, but did not see who did it.
Neither Frank nor Tom spoke that I heard. The
shooting occurred about 11 o'clock this
morning.
D. M. Crompton - I was standing in
front of the churchhouse when the shooting
occurred, about twenty steps away. I was near
the house when Gus came out. I saw Will
Williford wink at Frank Jones as Gus came out
of the house. Gus walked off a little ways. I
went to Frank and told him to keep quite; I did
not want them to have any trouble at the church.
Frank said he would keep quiet if they would let
him alone. Then I went to Gus and told him not
to raise any row here. He said he would keep as
cool as he could. Then Gus came on toward the
church, and when he got within six or seven feet
of the house he began shooting at Frank Jones.
Frank got up and turned his back to Gus. Gus
shot three times at Frank. I did not see Frank
make any attempt to shoot. Frank fell and was
dead in a very short time. Then Tom Jones and
Gus Garrison began shooting at each other. I do
not know which one shot first. I could not tell
how many times they shot at each other. They
both fell. Tom fell first, wounded. Gus was
dead in a very short time after he fell. I had30 Dallas Journal 2006
