Obituaries from The Southwestern Advocate 1939
James M. D. Turner, a pioneer patriot of Houston Methodism. He was the son of Rev. and Mrs.
J. M. Turner. He died at the age of 85.
April 27, 1939
Rev. George Lewis of the Oklahoma Conference died April 12, 1939. He was a resident of
Ardmore, Oklahoma.
Mr. A. V. Getty of Wolfe City, Texas, died last Thursday. Burial was on Saturday. He was
preceded in death in February, by his wife, Mrs. Getty.
Rev. Peter Stokes, D. D. of the South Carolina Conference and pastor at Bamberg, South
Carolina, died in a Baltimore Hospital on Friday, April 14, 1939 at 68 years of age.
May 4, 1939
E. G. Barnett of Bridgeport, Texas, was born on June 1, 1846, and died on March 21, 1939.
Born in Hardin County, Tennessee, he came to Texas in 1855. He is survived by a son, T. L.
Barnett of Paradise, Texas and a daughter, Mrs. Lee Phillips of Bridgeport. The funeral was held
in the Bridgeport Methodist Church on March 22, 1939.
James Taylor Lacy was born on November 22, 1849, and was buried on February 26, 1939, at
the Caledonia Cemetery in Mt. Enterprise Texas. Funeral Services were held in the Mt.
Enterprise Church. He is survived by four children, Mrs. C. R. Hardy of Centerville, Mrs. A. B.
Cook of Mt. Enterprise, Mrs. L. E. Oliver of Henderson, and W. G. Lacy of Huntsville, twenty
grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren.
A.C. Ketchum was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. On August 7, 1849, and died on April 2,
1939, in San Augustine, Texas. He came to Texas with his parents as an infant. He lived in
Sabine Pass, Galveston, and other Texas ports where he worked as a steamboat operator. In
1876, he married Miss Josephine McClanahan. They had five children, 3 of whom survive him:
Miss Clara Ketchum and Mrs. Alec Thompson of San Augustine and Mrs. C. McClanahan of
Houston. Funeral services were conducted at his home on April 3, 1939.
Mrs. Maggie E. Tate died on April 10, 1939, at the age of eighty-five at her son's home in
Waco, Texas. Her funeral was conducted by her pastor in Lindale.
John J. Hinds was born in Blount County, Alabama, on May 10, 1856, and died on January 5,
1939. He moved to Texas in the late 70's. He married Caroline Saulsbury on November 6, 1879.
He is survived by eleven children: Rev. W. C. Hinds of Midland, Mrs. A. C. Bell of Bruni, S. B.
Hinds, T. J. Hinds, A. M. Hinds, Mrs. Coleman Smith, and Mrs. Theo. Kincaid, all of Tye; Mrs.
W. H. Briggs of Petersburg, Texas, Mrs. J. O. Haymes of Big Spring, Mrs. Lee Smith of Ft.
Worth, and Mrs. W. H. Teaff of Merkel.
