Obituaries from The Southwestern Advocate 1939
Salem, near Murfreesboro, Tennessee on March 8, 1842, and enlisted in the Confederate Army
in 1861. In 1868, he came to Texas and married Miss Mollie Wilson in 1875. He is preceded in
death by his wife (1926).
Mrs. Nannie Ratliff, nee Miss Nannie Watson, was born on September 25, 1867, in Marietta
Georgia. She married S. D. Granger as a young woman. Two sons, Sanford and Alfred were
born. After the death of Mr. Granger, she married J. H. Ratliff in 1897 and had four children:
Mrs. Jewell Webb, Hugh, Lloyd, and Dan. They moved to Odessa Texas. Three family members
preceded her in death: Alfred Granger, Lloyd Ratliff, and in 1933, her husband. She is also
survived by a cousin, Mrs. Julia Miles, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Watson. Burial was in Odessa.
Dr. James Hampton Kirkland, Chancellor of Vanderbilt University from 1893 - 1937, died on
August 5, 1939.
Charles W. Herd died on August 6, 1939, in Ardmore, Oklahoma.

Rev. L. B. Elrod, D. D. The Rev. Lawrence B. Elrod of the Texas Conference died at the
Methodist Hospital in Houston on August 20, 1939. A native Texan, he was born in Anderson
County on October 29, 1865. The funeral was held in his home in Houston. He is survived by his
wife, two sons, L. C. Elrod and Paul Elrod of Houston; two daughters, Mrs. Ralph Walton,
Houston; Mrs. C. H. Hendry, Beaumont; three grandchildren, three brothers and several nieces
and nephews.
William Gaston Bryan, age 11, was killed in a car accident near Belleville, Illionis, August 20,
1939, after a visit to the World's Fair. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Gaston Bryan of
Houston. He is also survived by his sisters, Virginia Ruth and Lynn Dee, grandparents, Dr. and
Mrs. W. F. Bryan of Huntsville, and Mrs. Louise Westall of Houston. Services were held in
Houston.
Mrs. W. C. Everett, (Mrs. Jennie Flippen Everett) wife of W. C. Everett, died on August 9,
1939. Originally, from Tennessee, she lived in Texas since 1899 with her husband. Mrs. Everett
was born on May 11, 1865. She is survived by her husband; one son, W. C. Everett Jr., a
daughter, Mrs. Louise E. Williams, grandson, John Cates Everett,5 sisters and 1 brother. A son,
Leslie Everett, lost his life in the World War. Services were held on August 21.

Mrs. Sarah R. Walker of Dallas died on September 3, 1939, at the age of 84. She was the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hank, born in Rusk, Texas on February 1, 1855. She was the
mother of 12 children, six of whom survive, Judge Daniel Walker, Beaumont; W. J. Walker,
Timpson; Col. C. A. Walker, Manilla; L. W. Walker, San Diego; Mrs. P. H. Morton,
Jacksonville; and Miss Callie Joe Walker, Dallas, two sisters, Mrs. Tabitha Corley, Blum; and
Mrs. W. H. Overall, Alton. Interment was in Jacksonville, Texas.The Dallas Journal, 2010 86
