Farm NoIm.
The successful farmer works
twelve months each vear.
K'liae vegetables and fruits
on the farm and save the doctor
bills.
The business farmer works
six days in the week and rests
on the seventh.
There is farming and farm-
ing, but successful farming is
business furming.
Thorough plowing of the
land will make cultivation
easier and crops better.
Tomatoes are the earliest
vegetable raised, the moat
healthful and the easiest can-
ned.
To succeed in any business
a person has to closely attend
to that business in all its de-
tails.
A few fowls on the place with
comfortable quarters, will pro-
duce all the eggs and fries a
family need.
Every farmer should raise
fruit sufficient for home con-
sumption and to lay up for
winter use.
Great care should be exer-
cised in selecting seed corn.
A healthy growth depends up-
on a sound seed.
The farmers of Texas should
build out-houses and take
"* more care of their stock, and
greater prosperity will attend
them.
Every farmer should can his
own corn and vegttables, and
preserve his own fruits. It
is economy in saving doctor
bills.
The farmer who reads the
beat farm papers and thought-
fully cultivates his land will
never need to give a mortgage
on his farm.
The farmer who plants cot-
ton and corn only, generally
gives a chattel mortgage, and
his children are deprived of
the benefits of schools.
A few hogs on the premises,
a few choice milk cows and a
good brood mare will add
greatly to the pleasures of the
farm and help pay taxes aud
educate the children.
Land bedded in December
and January for cotton and re-
bedded when planting time
comes, will add largely to the
growth of the weed in giving
bearing qualities.
The farmers of Texas had a
surplus of 18,000.000 bushels
of corn to sell in 188;}. About
the same corn crop was raised
in 1889. What to do with this
surplus corn is growing to be
a serious question.
Do not look alone to the
wife for j'our supply of vegeta-
bles. Devote a little time each
day to the garden and your
table will be supplied with
the very best, prepared in the
most wholesome mauner.
The fanner who sells
corn in the fall for 25 cents
bushel aud buys again in
spring on a credit at 50 cents,
aud sells his cotton seed for 10
cents per bushel and lets his
cows die because he has noth-
infi to feed them on, will al-
ways be a tenant and a poor
one that.

All the mending should be
done once a week, if possible.
Nothing is better than a glass
i fruit jar for keeping cooking
I raisins moist.
A red-hot iron passed over
old putty will often soften it
so it can be easily removed.
A piece of sponge fastened
to a stick is a good thing with
which to clean lamp ohimueys.
A damp cloth dipped in salt
will remove egg stains from
silver, or tea stains from china
dishes.
If brooms are soaked iu
strong, hot salt aud water be
fore using, the splints will not
break iu sweeping.
Very finely sifted coal ashes
are excellent for cleaning brass.
Rub well and polish with a
wooleu rag.
Gieat improvement will be
found iu tea and coffee if they
are kept in glass fru't jirs in-
stead of tin boxes.
A sink or other home-drain
should be thoroughly washed
out with boiling suds at every
weekly wash day.
In using ammonia for do
mestic purposes, one table-
spoonful to a quart of water is
about the ordinary proportion.
If you dip the wicks of luiuos
in strong, hot vinegar and then
dry them, it will do away with
most of the disagreeable tmell,
A teaBpoonful of borax added
to cold staich will make clothes
stiller than anything else I
ever tried, though it add no
pohf h.
Before attempting to seed
raisins, cover them with hot
water aud let them stand fifteen
minutes The seeds can then
be removed easily, without a
particle of waste.
When the glass globes of
chandeliers have become
smoky and grimy, soak them
in hot water, to which a little
sal soda has been added Tlien
put some ammonia in hot wa-
ter, enter the globes and scrub
briskly with a stiff bru-h.
liinse thoroughly and wipe
dry.
The table thoul 1 always be
laid neatly, whether there be
guests or not. It" if be neees-
sary to ecom uiizr it; laundry
work, commence elsewhere
than iu naperv.
Anoid leCoUiUieliduliori often
giveu young housekeepers is
to use tea lt-aves in swe- pin
caipets, but their Uoe mi deli-
cate colors should be avoided,
but they, will uurely stain
light carpets
A box of powdered borax
should always be kept on the
sink shelf. A little added to
water in which dish-towels are
washed will help much to
keep them clean, and, at the
same time, keep one's hands
soft and smooth.
Strong carbolic acid is suie
death to bedbugs. It is also
one of the very best disinfVc
tants. A bottle should be kept
on hand—out of the reach of
children—and a few drops oc-
casionally put down the sink
<^rain, and in the slop j-irs.

A Cure for Diphtheria,
The following remedy is said
to be the best known, at least
it is worth trying, for physi-
cians seem powerless to cope
with the disease suores'sfu'ly.
At the hrst indication of diph-
theria iu the throat of a child
make the room close; then
take a tin cup and pour into it
a quantity of tar and turpen-
tine, e<jual parts. Then hold
the cup over a fire so at to till
the room with t'unieg. The lit-
tle patient, on inhaling the
fumes, will cough op and spit
out all the membranous matter,
and the diphtheria will pass
off. The fumes of the tar and
turpentine loosen the matter in
the throat, and thus i.fiord the
relief that has b..ftl -d the skill
of physicians.— Scientific Atuer

A newspaper recently biough^,
suit against forty-three men
who would not pay their sub-
scription and obtained judg
ment for the amount of each
claim. Of these, twenty eight
made affidavit that they had
no more than the law allowed
them thus preventing attach-
ment; then under decision of
the supreme court, they were
arrested for petty larceny and
bound over in the sum of $300
each. All but six gave bond,
while six went to jail. The
new postal law makes it lar-
ceny to take a newspaper and
refuse to pay for it.—Silver

■*- The power of the local press
is unlimited, says an Ex-
change. It attracts wealth
from abroad and makes known
the resources and cabilities of
the city or town. Every adver-
tisement iu a local paper is an
advertisement of the town, it is
the voice of the busy merchant
to his customers, and also those
who dwell at a distance. It
acts iu many ways to benefit
the town and increases its busi-
ness prosperity. For these,
and various reasons, it Is the
part of patriotism aud honesty
for men interested in the
growth and prosperity of a
town or city to patronize those
who patronize them, and to
help support and build up
home institutions rather than
those abroad. In other words
patronize your home paper, and
show to distant communities
tit at you appreciate the efforts
made to develop your town or
city. AVhiteboro News.
Education is the knuwledije
of how to use the whole of one's
self. Men are often like knives
with many blades—they know
how to open one, only orte—all
the rest are buried in the han-
dle, aud they are no better than
theo would have been if they
had been n?ade wit^one blatJv.
Many men use but" one or two
faculties out of the score with
which they are endowed. A
man is educated vvho know*
how to man a tool of every facul-
ty—how to open it, how to keep
it sharp aud how to apply it to
all practical purposes.—Ex-
