KINGSVILLE — Roel Gon-
zales. 5-11, 190-pound four-
year letterman at Premont
High School, has signed with the
Texas Ail University football
team.
Gil Steinke. Ail athletic dir-
ector and head football coach,
announced the signing this
weekend.
Gonzales has been a quarter-
back and running back for the
Cowboys, and also place kicked.
He had a 48-yard field goal
last season to furnish Premont
with its victory margin in bi-
district playoff action.
The Javeiina signee has been
an all-district selection for the
last two years, and was all-
area last fall.
In addition to his football,
Gonzales is a four-year letter-
man in track, a one-year let-
letterman in baseball, and has
been president of the Premont
Future Farmers of America
for two years.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Za-
rogoza P. Gonzales of Premont,
he played his high school foot-
ball under Doug Harvey.

FT. POLK, La. -- Army
Private Santos Rosales, 20, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Valentin Ro-
sales, Route 1, Rio Grande City,
recently completed eight weeks
of basic training at the U. S.
Army Training Center, Infan-
try, Ft. Polk, La.
He received instruction in
drill and ceremonies, weapons,
map reading, combat tactics,
military courtesy, military jus-
tice, first aid, and army history
and traditions.
Pvt. Rosales is a 1971 grad-
uate of Roma High School.
Before entering the arrny, he
was employed as a press oper-
ator by Whirlwind Manufactur-
ing Co., Houston.

For Pan Am
Official registration at Pan
American University reached
6,231 students for the spring
semester, again setting a re-
cord for the number of students
and for the second consecutive
year bringing an unusual in-
crease in spring enrollment
over the fall term.
Registrar Homer Pena said
the total current figure of 6,
231 is 14 more than were en-
rolled in the fall semester.
The present figure is 923
more than it was a year ago,
during the spring semester of
1971.
A total of 382 students who
never had been to college before
came to classes and accounted
for some of the Increase.
Of the total 3,303 ai*e males
and 2,928 are females.
Enrollment In the graduate
school Increased from 433 in
the fall to 466 during the spring
semester.
There are now 2,287 fresh-
men, 1,299 sophomores, 951
Juniors, 983 seniors, 245 spe-
cial students (principally per-
sons with degrees coming to
take a special course), and 466
graduate students.
The Homeroom teachers for
the -above listed students are
Mr. and Mrs. Beniclo Barrera.

KJNGSVILLE — Ben Saltz,
Galveston sophomore, will head
the Alpha Phi Omega (APO)
Bathtub Pull for the American
Heart Association at Texas Ail
University.
Saltz* appointment was an-
nounced by Van Balzer of Dris-
coll, Ail chapter president, and
Richard Garza of Rio Grande
City, projects chairman.
Climax of the campaign will
come Feb. 25-27 when the chap-
ter will pull a bathtub through
several South Texas towns en
route to Austin. At Austin the
chapter's representatives will
be joined by members of other
collegiate chapters over t h e
state in a "pull" to the Capi-
tol.

would solicit Klngsville busi-
ness men Feb. 11 and 12. Pro-
ceeds from a midnight movie
Feb. 18 will also gotothe Heart
Fund.

COLLEGE STATION — Jose
Esteban Vera of Grulla has
earned "DistinguishedStudent"
ranking at Texas A&M Univer-
sity, announced registrar Rob-
ert A. Lacey.
The undergraduate honor is
awarded students who have
excelled academically. Reci-
pients must earn at least a3.25
grade point ratio (out of a pos-
sible 4.0) during the grade
period.
In addition to a 3.25 or high-
er GPR, a student qualifying
for "Distinguished Student"
honors must have been enrolled
in a minimum of 15 hours and
have no grade lower than a
"C 9f
"Distinguished Student"
ranking is limited to 10 per
cent of Texas A&M undergrad-
uate enrollment.
Vera, a freshmen chemistry
major, is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Jose M. Vera, P.O. Box
61.

gold Intermediate principal has
been named in the 1971 edition
of Outstanding Personalities of
the South. Lopez" accomplish-
ments were published in the
latest edition of the OPS.

gave birth to a future Miss A-
America. The little bubble
checked in at 8 pounds and is
named Veronica Lisa. Veronica
joins little Richard in the fam-
ily.

Rodriguez and her children,
Carlos Hesiquio and Cynthia
Saline.
Mrs. Rodriguez is the for-
mer Judy Rodriguez, the daugh- \

and the late Dr. M. J. Rodri-
guez.
The family will be visiting
for a month. Mrs. Rodriguez
will be house guests of Mrs. M.
J. Rodriguez and Dr. and Mrs.
Hesiquio Rodriguez of Rio
