DURAN EARNS AWARD — Noel R. Duran son of Mr. and Mrs.
Efrain Duran has been awarded the highest marksmanship
award by the U.S. Marine "Leatherneck' magazine for his
marksmanship while in Marine Corps recruit depot in San
Diego, California. Colonel C.E. Caudill, Duran's command-
ing officer presented Duran with the award. Duran had to
compete with G3 other men in the platoon in order to win the
award and shot a score of 248 out of a possible 250 with his
closes rival coming in with a 235. Duran attended Rio Grande

ROMA FFA -- The Roma chapter of the future Farmers of
America was among the 23 FFA groups which received Cen-
tral Power and l ight Company's Farm Electrification Award
at the Area X Awards banquet in Kingsville recently. The chap-
ter received an excellent rating and a plaque presented by
Bruce Miller, CPL Director of Agricultural Development. Each
winning chapter also received electrical test equipment to be
used in future FFA demonstration work. Five South Texas
candidates for American Farmer degrees, Louis F. Jones of
Cotulla, David Rakowitz and Ricky Mathis of Pleasanton, Jim
Bode of Goliad, and John LawsonofSkidmore-Tynan, were also
introduced at the dinner. A record crowd of more than 22f>
FFA members and adult leaders attended the banquet, which
has been sponsored annually by Central Power and Light Com-
pany since 1951. CPL Vice-President Bill Price (right) con-
gratulates Hector Perez of Roma who accepted an electrical
award won by his chapter at the recent Awards Banquet in
Kingsville.
BACK TO SCHOOL DANCE — Homero Saldana and Elesio Smith Jr. hold up one of the
many posters they have been putting up promoting the Knights of Columbus Dance August
24. The dance a back to school special will feature the famed Sunny and the Sunliners
and will be held in the Knights of Columbus Hall which just recently doubled it's size.
Advance tickets will be 3.70 per couple or 4.25 at the door. Proceeds from the dance
are for the building funds of the Knights of Columbus which is presently in charge of a
project to raise some $20,0000)0 for the Catholic Convent School. The dance will be
from 9 to 1 and tickets can be obtained from Rio Motors Inc., Rio Grande Variety Store,
Val-U-Mart, Twin Palms and at Las Palmas Grocery in La Casita. (Herald photo by
