AN EDITORIAL
Back to School is just around the corner and what
are we going to do about the convicted felon that con-
tinues to stay on the board of trustees?
Heberto Barrera was convicted of a felony by a
federal jury and his appeals which went all the way
to the U.S. Supreme Court were rejected . . . thus he
became a felon and not qualified to serve on a board
which is delegated powers over federal funds.
Many people have asked the U.S. Attorneys to set
the pace and they have... they have gotten convictions
for vote fraud which is a felony.. . now the rest is up
to local authorities . . .to wit the local District Attor-
ney . . . Frank Randal Nye.
U.S. Attorney Anthony J.P. Farris told us that if
the need arose he would ask for an immediate cutoff
of all federal funds to the school district ... a move
which is not really necessary if our district attorney
would move to remove hirn from the board of trustees.
We have no personal grudge against Mr. Barrera but
we call on him to resign before this next school year
begins.
The fact that our school district allows a convicted
felon to serve on our board of trustees says very little
in a time when we are asking our youth to 'get in-
volved' . . .
We call on the school board of trustees to ask for
Mr. Barrera's resignation ... a move which should
be only a courtesy because a convicted felon even
loses his right to vote or seek public office and face
it Trustees Alicia McLellan, Dr. Gilberto (Nene)
Garza, Dr. Ramiro Narro, Attorney Alex Gabert, Raul
Guerrero, and President of the Board of Trustees
Arnoldo Gonzalez, Mr. Barrera is a convicted felon.
I see no personal pride in a trustee that continues
to serve on a board that permits a convicted felon to
serve on that same board of trustees, I see no pride
in exposing the youth of this community to public redi-
cule by youth of other school districts when they travel
to other communities and are reminded of the sordid
reputation of the 'Vote Fraud Case.'
We call on you the trustees, whom the people elect-
ed to represent them on the board, to ask Mr. Bar-
rera to step down as trustee for the Rio Grande City
Independent Consolidated School District.
We believe that Mr. Barrera has dedicated long
hours to the school district and we are sure the peo-
ple are grateful, but the conviction is in black and
white and we don't think the board is blind to that
fact.
A resignation either gracefully or otherwise is
needed by the school district and we are looking to
you the trustees of the district to get one.
