Rattlers stomp Nuevo Leon 88-0;
meet Edcouch-Elsa here Friday
The Rio Grande City Rattlers
are preparing this week to meet
a traditional football for, the
Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets.
The team are healthy and ready
to start their district competi-
tion. Thusfar the Rattlers have
posted a 3-2 record in pre-
dlstrict play. They defeated La
Joya, Hebbronville and Mon-
terrey losing only to tough Mis-
sion who is leading in district
28-4A and PSJA who last week
defeated rough Brownsville of
28- 4A.
Last week the Rattlers had
eight ground stompers in the
scoring game against the Mon-
terrey Nuevo Leon Tigers. The
Rattlers won the one sided af-
fair 88-0, with the Tigers mak-
ing only one first down the en-
tire game.
Hubert Gonzalez scored four
touchdowns to lead the Rattlers
against the Tigers with field
general Jose Leon Garcia scor-
ing 20 points. Prajedes Bazan
and Ruben Lopez each had 12
points and Roy Larralde and
Lupe Gallegos each crossing
the pay dirt line one for six
points each.
Ricky Hlnojosa toed three
PATs.
The game opened with a one
sided first quarter that proved
to tell the visitors that it was
going to be a long night. Jose
Leon Garcia quarterbacked the
Rattlers to a 34-0 first quarter
play and added another whopping
21 points to take a 55-0 lead
into the dressing room at half-
time.
Garcia scored on a two yard

Fifteen basketball hope-
fuls reported for opening
practice this week at Pan
American University.
The squad includes six
letter men, two squadmen,
two sophomores, one
transfer and four fresh-
men.
All-America candidate
Pete Perry, a 6-foot-101/2
center, gives the Broncs a
highly mobile big man to
build their attack around.
Leading scorer Reese
Stovall and Carlos McCul-
lough are returning start-
ers to join Perry in the
front line. McCullough is
6-7, Stovall 6-G.
The other letter men are
5-10 guard Don Cardenas
and two men who lettered
two seasons ago, 6-5 Eddie
Thacker and 5-10 Dave
Haas.
Returning squadmen are
6-3 Ken Mitchem and 6-
2 1/2 Dennis Briscoe. The
sophomores are 6-4 David
Moser of Edlnburg and 6-3
Bill Van Burkleo of Mc-
Allen. The transfer is 6-1
Perry Jackson.
The four freslfmen are
5-10 Jesus (Chuy) Guerra
and 6-5 Wenslao (Wenche)
Garcia, both of Roma; 6-5
Ron Haines, McAllen; and
6-1 Danny Loff, Browns-
ville.
Pan Am opens Its season
Dec. 1 at home against
Southwestern University.
Former PGA champions
Doug Ford and Dave Marr
missed the cut in the 1972 PGA
golf championship in Detroit.
They shot 154 and 159, respec-
tively, for the first two rounds.

Humberto Gonzales scored on
runs of one and 23 yards

quarter.
Gallegos intercepted a pass
and returned it 23 yards for
a touchdown. Gonzalez added
the extra point. Ruben Lopez
caught a 62 yard touchdown pass
and Gonzalez kicked the extra
point. Humberto Gonzalez
capped the scoring in the se-
cond quarter on a 62 yard
scamper and Christ Gonzalez
booted the extra point.
In the final period of the game
Gonzalez galloped 66 yards to
score a touchdown and the score
was 81-0. Ruben Lopez caught
an 18 yard scoring pass after
which Ricardo Hinojosa booted
the extra point to end the game.
