YOUNG LOVELY — Lovely and smiling young Patricia Mi-
chelle Garcia celebrated her first birthday with a Tinata'
party. The party was held at the Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church Parish Hall for about 45 young friends. Party
favorites, cookies, punch, cake and the works were the high-
light of young Patricia's party. She is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Juan J. Garcia of Rio Grande City.
WESLACO — Though Valley
bank deposits for September
took a seasonal dip of $12 mil-
lion from the August all-time
high of $727 million, they kept
a $21.7 million advance over
the pre-cotton harvest July
totals.
The September business baro-
meter published by the Valley
Chamber of Commerce showed
bank deposits of $541,176,902,
and savings and loan invest-
ments of $173,985,563, for a
total of $715,162,465.
This compared with the Aug-
gust figures, which reflected
gross cotton harvest receipts,
of $556,860,984 in banks and
$170,190,510 in savings and loan
association, for the record high
$727,051,494 total. August was
the first month that area bank
deposits exceeded $700 million.
Comparison with last year's
figures reveals a $105 million
increase in total deposits since
the September 1971 barometer,
when bank deposits totaled
$466,616,973 and savings and
laon investments $143,702,571
for $610,319,544.
Building permits for Septem-
ber totaled $4,658,518 with Mc-
Allen topping Valley construc-
tion activity at $1,709,756.
Brownsville issued building
permits of $774,850and Harlin-
gen reported $624,835, and Mis-
sion, $455,711.
Edlnburg had new building
starts of $410,393; Weslaco re-
ported $216,860; P h a r r,
$121,612; and San Benito, $100,-
569.
Other towns reporting build-
ing activity were — Donna,
$16,282, Elsa, $3,070; La Fer-
ia, $8,980; Mercedes, $45,100;
Raymondvllle, $73,200; San
Juan, $6,700; and South Padre
Island, $90,600.

ASC community committee-
men elected by mail ballots De-
cember 1, 1972, will assist the
County ASC Committee with
ASCS programs, conduct farm
community meetings, and serve
as delegates to the Starr Coun-
ty Convention to elect the county
ASC committee.

The Starr Grande 4-h club
held its monthly meeting Oct.
2, 1972. Mario Guillen Jr. pre-
siding called the meeting to
order. Lazaro Rodriguez Jr.
led in the 4-h motto, pledge
and prayer. Maria Elena Ro-
driguez gave the Inspiration on
National 4-h Week Spotlights
Youth. Nina Salinas read the
minutes and roll call.
Abel Rodriguez gave a report
on which was made to welcome
the President of the United
States. And Ricky Hinojosa
also gave a report on the Food
and Nutrition Training Classes.
(Under Old Business) The
posters were brought and they
were judged by special guest
Mona Trigo. The winners of
the poster contest were Ricky
Hinojosa, 1st place and Laura
Ramirez, 2nd place.
National 4-H Week was dis-
cussed. A banner was put up
In front of a Variety Store to
promote 4-H Week.
(New Business) The lambs
should be coming in soon. Also
that there would be a county
council meeting on Oct. 3,1972.
During the meeting a note was
received from Melissa Garza
saying she was resigning from
her offices because she wouldn't
be able to carry out her duties.
So nominations were open for
County Council delegate and
game leader. Arar.eli Vela was
elected game leader and Delia
Lopez was elected County Coun-
cil Delegate.
The meeting was adjourn to
recreation. Willie Rodriguez
and Araceli Vela led in some
western and square dancing.
