Starr County voters went
along with the statewide voting
trend in the General Elections
Tuesday returning Democratic
Parly incumbents and bringing
new-comers to office.
Mario Kamirez, incumbent
county judge, was elected to
another four-year term He
carried all 9 voting precincts as
well as the absentee vote.
In other races incumbents in
contested races returned to
office after a futile effort bv La
Raza Unida to elect some
candidates to county offices.
Those candidates feared to be in
trouble were the Justices of the
Peace, Bruno Lozano and
Arnoldo Gonzalez Jr. However,
the Raza Unida could not
muster enough votes to make
any dent in both of the can-
didates' early commanding
leads.
Gonzalez was opposed by
Raza Unida candidate, Librado
Perez, who came out of the
election process with 55 votes. It
Gov. Dolph Briscoe and the
Democratic ticket held sweep-
ing election victories today, rid-
ing a wave of national dis-
content and the texas political
tradition.
Jim Granberry, the chief los-
er to Briscoe, put it this way:
"Apparently there was a strong
anti-Republican trend all over
the nation that was difficult to
overcome."
Sen. Lloyd Bentsen, D-Tex.,
whose term did not expire this
year, had a different view, in-
cluding the national one
"The American people are
fed up with high interest rates,
tight money and a deepening
recession."
Democrats capped their ef-
forts by ousting a Republican
U.S. House member. Bob Price
of Pampa. and holding on in the
21st district with Bob Krueger
succeeding retiring Rep. O. C.
Fisher, also a Democrat.
At the legislative level, the
GOP lost two House seats with a
Republican Senate seat in
doubt.
Gov. Briscoe saw his personal
victory this way
"I consider this election a
vote of confidence in i my i
record ... a record of integrity,
compassion and sound fiscal
management."
The governor made the fact
that no new state taxes were
imposed his major campaign
point.
The total vote was an esti-
mated 1.6 million out of 5.4 mil-
lion registered, pointing up pre-
election findings of serious vot-
er apathy. Educated pre-eiec-
tion forecasts were for a vote
total of 2.75 million.
The latest totals, with Demo-
crats listed first. Republicans
was first believed that those
voters who had voted in the
Democratic Primary in May
would jump to the Raza Unida
Party, but the Democrats stuck
together defeating Perez.
Mrs. Minerva Pena, the in-
cumbent Justice of the Peace,
from Precinct 2, ran unopposed,
but there had been rumors
some dissidents from the Roma
area would break Democratic
ranks and begin a write-in
against her. However, the effort
was useless. Mrs. Pena won
with an unofficial 1,148 votes
from precincts 6 and 7.
Arturo Clarke, the Justice of
the Peace-elect from Precinct 4
won handily. He was without
opposition. The incumbent
commissioner was re-elected.
All county offices will be
occupied by members of the
Democratic Party.

80ND ELECTION NOVEMBER 5, 1974
The Roma Historical
Museum Association, known to
many as the Roma Historical
Society, met October 24 to
discuss arrangements for the
1976 bicei.nial festivities to be
held in the city of Roma.
Several matters were
discussed. The executive board
desires opening the museum on
designated days and during
specific hours. In addition, the
group expressed support for a
scholarship program and the
construction of a shed to house
larger exhibits.
Mrs. R. T. Barrera reports
that the board members of the
Association commented
favorably on the restoration of
the Plaza as a fitting
background for the celebration
of a county wide Bi-centennials
program worthy of our
historical heritage "
Robert Parvins, an editor
with Texas Highways
Magazine, visited the museum
and a report was given on the
visit.
Parvin was in the area last
Thursday and Friday to obtain
information and photography
for an upcoming article on the
Rio Grande area including Rio
Grande City, the Historic
Districts of Roma San Ignacio
and Laredo.
The Texas Highway
Department in Austin publishes
the travel and historically
oriented magazine. The article
on the Rio Grande area is
scheduled for the December
edition.
