In our youth lies our hope and our future. Last weekend the ac-
cent was on youth, as approximately a thousand of our young
people participated in the tenth annual Starr County Youth Fair.
The projects which they completed, from cakes to woodworking,
from clothing to paintings, from science exhibits to livestock, all
showed skill and a determination to excel. Many awards were
given, as each person yearned to be that top winner in his category.
There were triumphs and disappointments, but every person who
participated came away with something more than just a ribbon.
The experiences had by each young person helped them io grow
and improve within.
The Starr County 4-H Adult Leaders are grateful to the many
people who helped make the tenth annual Starr County Youth Fair
a success. Many of our citizens gave freely of their time and
energies to make the Fair possible. It was time and energy well-
invested in our youth.

Why People Smoke
Recently the question, Why-
do you think people smoke'.'"
appeared in the "Dear Abbey"
newspaper column. Here is her
answer:
Most young people begin to
smoke because they think it
makes them look "grown-up"
or smart, or to emulate
someone they admire. Some
smoke to keep another smoker
■ company.
— They continue to smoke
because they "enjoy" the
feelii.g of relaxation it gives
them i at first i, and many say it
keeps their weight down. Then
they become addicted,
i Nicotine is habit forming, and
don't let anyone tell you it
isn't.)
The "unconscious - death -
wish theory" is also valid.
Anyone who persists in doing
that which he knows could be
his undoing is unconsciously
hastening his end.
