Although Rio was soundly
defeated 34-0 by Edcouch-Elsa
last Friday night, the trip by the
Fighting Rattler Band was
successful. The Rattler Band
clearly outmarched, outplayed
and simply outperformed the
Yellowjacket band. The
spectacular show put on by Rio
had E-E fans clapping and
whistling and after the game
several favorable comments
were heard such as "Rio won
the battle of the bands." The
Band Boosters have worked
extra hard to make the Band's
annual trip upstate successful.
Belated Congratulations are
in order to Miss Ginger Cum-
mings, this year's Band
Sweetheart She followed in her
older sister's footsteps. Susan
Kay Paulbicke (formerly
Cummings) received that honor
in 1966. Susan Kay is now living
in Milwuakee, Wisconsin.
Ginger was crowned
Sweetheart at halftime of the
Rio Grande City-Mercedes
football game.
The American Society of
Starr County recently a
"Showing On Self Breast
Examination" at the Garmon
Theater. According to Mrs.
Sofia Garcia, about 50 women
attended. The Society wishes to
thank Mr. Richard Gutierrez
and Mr. Isauro Zarate for the
use of the theater and Mr. Luis
Olivarez, the projectionist for
helping with the film.
Several businesses, including
several government agencies,
celebrated Veterans Day on
Monday, Oct. 27 and brought
out Old Glory to unfurl in the
nice breeze and warm sun.
Starting in 1978, Vets Day will
again be celebrated on Nov. 11,
the original Veterans Day. The
U.S. Post Office and County
Courthouse in Rio, it was ob-
served by one citizen, did not
raise the flag. Wonder why.
Briscoe Aiding Anti-Constitution Move
AUSTIN-The chairman of
Citizens to Preserve the Texas
Constitution says the campaign
to defeat constitutional revision
in the November 4 election is
gaining ground rapidly with the
help of Governor Dolph Briscoe
State Senator Peyton
McKnight of Tyler said the
Govenor's decision to oppose all
eight propositions on the ballot
"came after his own careful
analysis which convinced him
the present Constitution is far
better than the revised version
written by the legislature."
Citing reports of voter
apathy, McKnight called upon
Texans to familiarize them-
selves with the issues and vote
next Tuesday.
"I believe that most people
Rattler Homecoming Slated Friday
Homecoming Week will come
to a climax Friday night at
halftime of the Rio Grande City-
Falfurrias football game when
the new Homecoming Queen is
announced.
Homecoming Week is being
sponsored by the Rio Grande
City High School Junior Class
and honored will be the classes
of 1936, '46, '56, '66 and 1976 as
part of the bicentennial theme,
"Time: A Past to Remember,
Former Rio Man
Dead From OD
A former Rio Grande City
man, Rogelio Allen Gonzalez,
died from an apparent drug
overdose Saturday night in
Edinburg.
Gonzalez, 28, living in
McAllen at the time of his
death, was pronounced dead on
arrival at Edinburg General
Hospital Saturday night after
an acquaintance, not identified,
drove him to the hospital.
Edinburg Justice of the Peace
Jim Wilson, who pronounced
Gonzalez DOA, said the
preliminary report listed the
cause of death as respiratory
distress, brought about by an
apparent drug overdose. He
added that it would take six or
seven weeks for a complete
autopsy report from Austin,
pending tests of blood and fluid
samples.
The Present to I.ive, and A
Future to Foresee."
Homecoming Queen can-
didates are Diana Guerrero,
Thelma Ruelas and Maria
Barba while the Duchess-Elects
are Leticia Venecia, Sandra
Garza and Filomena Solis.
The celebration will actually
begin on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
with a parade to begin at the
school gate. It will travel
towards Britton Ave. and then
return to school. Scheduled for
approximately 5:45 til 6 p.m.
will be a pep rally and a hugh
bonfire. Culminating that
evening will be a Freshmen
football game between Rio and
the Valley Children School of
Mission.
Highlighting the sporting
events will be the "Big
Shootout" between the Grulla
Cranes and the Rio 8th graders
at Rattler Stadium.
Friday will see the spirited
Rattlers entertain the
Falfurrias Jerseys in a game
which will have no bearing on
the district championship
outcome Even so it will be a
hard-flitting game just to stay
out of the cellar and the Rat-
tlers will be ready for the en-
counter, according to Head
Coach Don Cummings.
Rio citizens are urged to
come out and support the
Rattlers and to enjoy the fine
performance of the Rattler
band.
A dance after the game will
end the festivities.
who study the proposed new
constitution will vote against it*,'
he said. "But if a voter hasn't
had time to examine every
controversial provision, then he
or she should play it safe and
keep our present Constitution
by voting no."
In expressing his opposition
to the new charter, Governor
Briscoe pointed out that Texas
has a low per capita tax burden
and is the only industrial state
without an income tax. He said
that annual Sessions of the
legislature, as proposed in
Proposition One on the ballot,
"would make it more difficult to
hold the line on new taxes and
would lead us down the road to a
state income tax."
"I don't think the people want
to give future legislatures a
blank check, which is what
these eight propositions do."
Keep Halloween
En joyable This Year
AUSTIN- Halloween is just
around the corner, and the
Texas Safety Association
reminds you that it won't be
long 'til the little ghosts and
goblins celebrate their big night
October 31. But too many
children--and adults-have
found the fun to be short lived
because of carelessness or lack
of awareness. TSA offers this
bit of advice for a happier
Halloween.
- The Great Pumpkin can
prove a greater disaster if
you're not careful. If you use
nature's product, the pumpkin,
always instruct children to
carve away from-not toward-
themselves as they create Jack-
O-Lanterns. As far as lighting
the will-o-the-wisp is concerned,
never use a candle in a plastic
or cardboard pumpkin In fact,
a flashlight or other battery-
operated light is even best for
the natural pumpkin-it glows
just as well, and is much less a
fire hazard.
- Don't costume your little
trick or teaters in flammable
outfits. The use of crepe paper
is an invitation to trouble, and
probably won't survive a walk
around the block even if it
doesn't catch fire from a
candle-powered Jack-O-
I^antern. Choose costumes that
do not restrict movement, and
eliminate masks that obstruct
the child's vision.

PLANNED RIO HIGH SCHOOI^An artist's sketch of the planned Rio High
School to be built just west of the stadium shows how the new edifice will look.
Classrooms will revolve around the library capable of housing 22 thousand
volumes. Also included in the building which will contain six math classrooms,
five science classrooms, four English classrooms, a business area, arts and
crafts centers, vocational agriculture classrooms, will be an administrators
section with offices and lounge plus a student lounge. The lockers will be along
the corridors and a small semi-circle patio will adorn the front side. The patio
will be like a small amphitheater and it will be capable of holding the entire
student body on assemblies or concerts, according to Ruber. Saenz, school
principal. The building will measure approximately 58 thousand square feet.
The front of the building will face the gym. An added feature of the classrooms
will be demountable walls which will give more flexibility in enlarging or
cutting down classroom space. Designing the building was the Taniguchi,
Shefelman, Vackar and Minter Firm from Austin, Texas.
