The Rio Grande City Garden
Club was honored by having as
guests at its regular meeting
Thursday night Mrs. Phillip
Watson, Governor of District VI
of Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. and
Mrs. G. Browning Smith, im-
mediate past president of Texas
Garden Clubs, Inc. and Garden
Club Woman of the Year on
Garden Club day at the Texas
State Fair on October 14. Both
women are from Harlingen.
Mrs. Watson gave an in-
spirational greeting from
District VI, and Mrs. Smith
gave a very interesting and
informative talk on "The
Miracle of Growing for
Showing." She said that the
first thought was for the Flower
Show but any amateur gar-
dener may enter the classes for
Easter lilies, petunias, and
amaryllis. Whether you are
entering the Flower Show or
growing for showing in your
home or garden, the in-
formation she gave would be
useful.
She presented everyone with
a list of things to do, starting
with 120 days, which is now, to
the day before the show or when
you desire to display materials.
Now is the time to start
planting, not when plants are in
bloom in other yards. If you
have not planted annuals,
perennials, or bulbs, do so now
and start a program of deep
watering, when necessary,
frequent fertilizing, pinching
back, staking, mulching, and
spraying. Planning ahead is the
key to success here.
Ninety days before the show,
turn potted plants to improve
their symmetrical balance. See
if they have outgrown their pots
or are in dirty, cracked, or
unattractive pots. A pot should
always balance the plant by not
being too small or over-
powering for the plant. The
plant is the important thing.

Thirty days before the show is
the time to begin planning how
many possible entries one will
make in the Flower Show. It
might help to tag likely ap-
pearing specimens as they
develop. This is the time to be
sure you have the correct name
and variety, to avoid last
minute confusion.
Watch for chlorosis, the
yellowing of foliage due to the
lack of available iron in the soil.
Spray with iron chelate both the
plants and the soil, if the
directions indicate. A foliar
feeding or two will give healthy,
vigorous foliage but must be
done at regular intervals if it is
to substitute for ground fer-
tilization. A good mulch will
prevent weeds from robbing
your plants of moisture and
nutrition, keep the soil in better
condition, and save on water
bills.
For indoor plants to be shown,
groom carefully. Watch for
snails and insect damage on all
plants. Dust and spray when
necessary. Always keep a sharp
eye on likely-looking exhibit
materials.
Two days before the show,
water deeply preparatory to
cutting. Make a quick check of
material to be cut the next day.
Do a last minute on the correct
name of your plants.
The day before the show, take
a bucket of warm water and a
sharp knife to the garden. Cut
stems longer than needed and
place in the water. Put the
bucket in a cool place, out of
drafts, for several hours or
overnight.
Remember you can take
away from a specimen out you
cannot add anything. Plant
shine, milk or other additives
will disqualify the specimen or
plant. Polishing with a soft cloth
or nylon stocking will make a
big difference.
Mrs. Watson and Mrs. Smith
were presented with schedules
for the flower show, "Our
Country through the Years,"
and they were very enthusiastic
in their praise of the schedule.
They gave arrangements.
The evening began at 6:00
p.m. with a delicious buffet
dinner, in the home of Mrs.
Herminio Saenz. Card tables
covered with colorful cloths and
centered with attractive small
potted plants or flower
arrangements were laid for
eating. Each honored guest was
presented with a corsage of red,
white, and blue flowers, with
greenbacks furnishing the
foliage. At 7:30 a number of
guests arrived for the program.
Following the program, cake,
nuts, and punch were served by
the hostesses, Mrs. Saenz and
Mrs. Humberto Garza.
