The January meeting of the
Woman's Club of Rio Grande
City, TFWC, was held in the
home of Mrs. Mabel Sanchez.
The president, Mrs. G. A.
Garza, welcomed a new
member, Mrs. James L. Shafer.
Mrs. John Hinojosa, acting
program committee chairman,
announced the evening's
program, under the Investment
and Securities Division of the
Education Department, to be
presented by Mrs. Edwin
LaGrange.
Mrs. LaGrange introduced
the guest speaker, Jose A.
Hinojosa, who spoke on "Sound
Testamentary Planning."
Hinojosa said, "The most
important instrument for a
sound testamentary plan is a
written will. The second most
important step, and it goes right
with the first, is to see a lawyer
and discuss your problems with
him, so that he may draw up a
will individualized for your
specific needs. Unless the
property you own, which in-
cludes all of your separate
property and half of any
community property that you
may have an interest in, ex-
ceeds $60,000, there is no reason
to even begin worrying about
having a will that provides for
estate taxes. If your gross
estate exceeds $100,000, then
you need to start seriously
considering planning your
estate so as to avoid the crunch
of estate taxes. If the gross
estate of you and your spouse
exceeds $200,000, then there is a
basic way of planning to save on
estate taxes upon the death of
the survivor."
Hinojosa gave com-
prehensive reasons for each
step. At the close of his talk, he
conducted a question and an-
swer session. Mrs. Garza
thanked the guest speaker and
welcomed his wife, Mrs.
Hinojosa.
The hostess served congealed
salad, finger sandwiches, nuts,
mints, and coffee to the guests
and sixteen members present.
The February 5 meeting will be
at the home of Mrs. Sanchez,
with Mrs. John Hinojosa ser-
ving as hostess.
We wish them happiness.

If you can get fresh fennel in
your vegetable market, it will
make a lovely addition to a raw
vegetable platter to be served
with a dip as an appetizer. Cut
off the fennel fronds and use
for garnishing. Discard any
very coarse or blemished part
from the outside of the bulb.
Cut into wedges and wash and

The Talmud says this of strength: "There are ten strong things.
Iron is strong, but fire melts it. Fire is strong, but water quenches
it. Water is strong, but the clouds evaporate it. Clouds are strong,
but wind drives them away. Man it strong, but sleep overcomes it.
Sleep is strong, yet death is stronger. But loving kindness survives
death.
