Rattlers Dump Redskins; Win District Championship
MCALLEN-The Rio Grande
City Rattlers allowed the Donna
Redskins to go ahead 2-0 early
in the game at the McAllen High
School gym, and then settled
down to ease past the pesky
Indians, 60-49, to capture the
District 16-3A Championship.
The Rattlers, coached by
Ramiro Villegas, ended the
regular season with a 15-17 won-
loss record and the third
championship or share of it in
the past four years.
It was the experience of the
more formidable Rattlers
which upset the Redskin apple
cart on its way to the throne
room.
The Indians had earlier in the
week gotten past two other

Glads Shoot Falcons
The Roma Gladiators ran past
the still Los Fresnos Falcons,
69-38, Tuesday night at the Pan
American University fieldhouse
to advance into the state's
regional playoffs.
Roma's record now stands at
26-fl while the Falcons ended the
season at 18-8.
The game's high point man
was Chencho Noyola of Los
Fresnos with 21 points while
Orlando Guerra, Ruben Chapa
and Octavio Cantu scored 18,10
and 10 points, respectively for
the Roma Gladiators.
EDINBURG - The Roma
Gladiators kept alive their
never-say-die tradition and
totally frustrated the Freer
Buckaroos last Thursday in a
sudden-death playoff game, 60-
58.
The game, played at the Pan
American University
fieldhouse, was close all the
way until the final gun. With
just 11 seconds on the clock, Joe
Villarreal scored his only two
points on charity tosses and
pulled the Glads ahead 60-58.
Roma's victory coupled with
Rio Grande City's win over
Donna brought two district
championships to Starr County.
Roma competes in 31-AA while
Rio is in 16-3A.
High scorers for Roma were
Ruben Chapa with 23, Orlando
Guerra and Javier Gonzalez
with 12 each and Octavio Cantu
with 8.
Freer's high point man was
six-seven Ronnie Proctor with
20.
The Basketball Hall of Fame

V-i
finalists, Edcouch-Elsa and
Mercedes, and for the first few
seconds seemed like they might
continue their victory route.
But the fierce rebounding of
Fred Sanchez and deadly aim of
Luis Madrigal sent the younger
Donna squad down in defeat.
Madrigal swished the nets for
24 points while teammates
Richard Contreras, Ricardo
Lopez and Sanchez added 10,12,
and 10, respectively. The
Rattlers began and ended hot
with a cool period in between
but the Redskins could not take
advantage of the Snakes'
coldness.
With the Rattlers ahead with
11 points, it seemed that the
Redskins were putting
something together but the ball
stealing and forced turnovers of
Rio's Javier Fuentes set Donna
back to stay.
Donna's point producers were
Charles Hillis with 18 and I^es
Jackson with 13.
Rio started and played five
seniors and one sophomore
while the Indians were all
underclassmen.

Changes Sought
AUSTIN - The head of the
Independent Cattlemen's
Association said Friday that
Texas ranchers should be
aware that the U.S. Department
of Agriculture plans to seek
further changes in brucellosis
program requirements.
ICA President T. A. Cun-
ningham of Goliad said USDA
"plans to pop Texas with 16
pages of changes despite
promises that we had
swallowed the whole pill" when
the Animal Health Commission
accepted the present
requirements under court order
and threat of quarantine.
The 16 pages of planned
changes were disclosed by Dr.
Paul Becton, USDA's national
brucellosis coordinator,
Thursday at a meeting of the
Texas Animal Health Com-
mission.
Cunningham said promises
that no changes were planned
were made by Becton at a Dec.
30 court hearing in Austin and in
several other meetings with
cattlemen.
Cunningham said he cannot
evaluate the new changes
because they haven't been
published.
He said also that "there is
little consolation in Dr. Becton's
new promise that USDA won't
bring pressure for immediate
adoption of the new changes."
"Ranchers are no happier
today than ever with what
has been forced on them," he
said. "They know that only a
decent research effort can
finally put an end to
brucellosis."
Bears Trip Rattlers
FALFURRIAS - The height of
the eighth ranked West Oso
Bears was too much for the
much smaller Rio Grande City
Rattlers as the Rio team came
home on the short end of the
score, 81-58, after a bi-district
encounter here.
The Rattlers suffered cold
shooting from the floor and the
fact that not many rebounds
came their way extinguished
the Rattlers fire beginning in
the first quarter. Coach Ramiro
Villegas' squad finished the
season with a 15-18 record and
the district 16-3A Cham-
pionship.
Leading the Rio scoring
parade were Ricardo Contreras
with 16, Luis Madrigal with 15,
and Ricardo Lopez with 11.
Other scorers for Rio were
Javier Fuentes 6, Fred Sanchez
4, Jaime Garcia 3, Wesley
Rollins 2 and Humberto Trevino
1.
The game's high scorer was
Frankie Davis with 24 for West
Oso.
