May Brought Screwworm
To 16 More Texas Counties
MISSION, The 26
Texas counties that recorded
their first 1976 screwworm
cases during May brought the
total to 1,968 cases in 80 infested
counties, reports Dr. James E.
Novy. Starr County reported 57
cases.
He is veterinarian in charge
of field operations for the U.S.
Department of Agriculture
(USDA) Screwworm
Eradication Program. It is
operated for USDA by the
Animal & Plant Health In-
spection Service (APHIS).
Only comparable year in
history of the program was 1972
when 90,983 screwworm cases
were tallied in Texas, notes
Novy. May's 1,112 confirmed
cases compare to 4,197 in the
same month of 1972.
By May 31 of that year Texas
had recorded 5,208 cases. It
seems, observes Novy, that
density of spread may not be as
severe in 1976 as it was in 1972.
Greatest spread of this
parasite during May was north
into the Hill Country and West
Texas, notes Novy. Warming
spring and summer weather
brings screwworms, which feed
on live flesh of warm blooded
animals, northward from
overwintering areas in Mexico
and South Texas each year.
May found screwworms
taken from wounds in animals
as far west as Presidio and
Pecos counties, north to Knox
and Baylor counties, and east to
Austin and Calhoun counties.
Screwworms are larvae of the
primary screwworm fly. Adult

females of this species deposit
eggs on wounds in warm
blooded animals. As eggs hatch
the screwworms enter the
wound to feed on live flesh.
After about a week the worms
(now about half an inch long)
drop to the ground. At this stage
they are tough and rubbery so
being stepped on by a large
animal will not kill them. The
worms enter the ground where
they pupate for about a week
before emerging as adult flies.
The Screwworm Eradication
Program is based on the sterile
male principle. Females of this
species mate only once in their
lives. Sterile flies are produced
in the APHIS insectary and
released to mate with wild flies.
Eggs produced as the result of a
fertile to sterile mating will not
hatch, ending the life cycle.
