Garden Club Joins Ruth Circle Installs Officers
Poinsettia Society
ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED—Mr. and Mrs.
Rafael Trevino Martinez of Nuevo Laredo, Tamps.,
Mexico are proud to announce the engagement and
approaching marriage of their daughter, Maria Esther
Trevino, to Roel Omar Flores, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Rodolfo Flores of Rio Grande City. The couple have
planned a December 11 wedding. They will recite their
vows at 12:00 noon in San Martin de Porras Church in
Nuevo Laredo. A reception will follow at Villa Fon-
tana. The birde-elect received her teaching degree
from Escuela Normal Urbana Federal Cuahtemoc in
Nuevo Laredo. Her fiance is a graduate of Rio Grande
City High School and in Texas A&M University, where
he received a Chemical Engineering degree.
The Rio Grande City
Garden Club is a member of
the newly re-organized
American Poinsettia
Society, which held its first
meeting on November 2 at
11:00 a.m. at the McAllen
Country Club. A business
meeting was held prior to the
luncheon.
The installation of the new
officers prefaced the ac-
tivities of an organization
dedicated to the promotion
of cultural practices for
growing one of the valley's
most beautiful plants. . The
American Poinsettia Society
is the only national plant
society to be organized in
Texas. It is home-based in
Misssion
Mission is the home of the
only one-flower Poinsettia
Show staged as a standard
show, in the United States.
The first show was held in
conjunction with a guest day
meeting of the Mission
Garden Club, Dec. 1, 1942.
Because of its success the
members were encouaaged
by many people from over
the Valley. The plant society
was formed.
The first president was
Mrs. George R. Boyle of Rio
Grande City. The Charter
Memberships were closed
Dec. 15, 1954. The first
Bulletin of the American
Poinsettia Society was
published May 1955.
The organization
published annual bulletins
until 1966 and shortly
thereafter became inactive,
or on a stand-by basis,
ceasing to publish but
remaining active in
distributing information
on horticulture practices by
means of correspondence,
lectures, and slide
presentations.
Each year at the annual
Poinsettia Show, Tropical
Christmas, at Mission, the
American Poinsettia Society
presents a Certificate of
Award for excellence of
horticulture, to a specimen
selected by National Council
of Flower Show .Judges who
grade by the scale of points
established by the Society.
Landscape, cultural
practices, history of the
flower and its benefactor,
Joel R. Poinsett, with many
legends have been recorded
by the Society.
With the re-establishment
of the Society in 1977, new
information, particularly
on a large number of new
introductions and varieties,
will be given publicity.
Mrs. T. L. Duncan,
president, urges interested
growers to become ac-
tive.
Mrs. Bernice Warren
hostessed the meeting for
the installation of officers for
1978-80 on November 8.
She served pumpkin
bread, carrot cake, and
apple cake to Mesdames
Dorothy Anderson, Vangie'
Anderson, Adela Gutierrez,
Helen Harbert, Daisy
Hinojosa, Nancy LaGrange,
Wilma LaGrange, Diana
Peterson, Karen Peterson
and Rachel Ramirez.

Bernice Warren, Vice-
president; Vangie Anderson,
secretary; and Helen
Shuford, treasurer.
Welcoming the new of-
ficers into their position, she
compared them to a violin.
The president must ac-
complish harmony in the
club; the vice-president
must stay in tune in case
she needs to step in; the
secretary must make sure
there are no "lost chords" in
the minutes; and the
treasurer must lead the

Day Of Prayer Observed
Women of the First Baptist
Church and First United
Methodist Chruch of Rio
Grande City met in the home
of Ms. Howard Bass for '' ;
International Women's Jay
of Prayer on Mor .ay,
November 7.
A salad supper was
served on the veranda of
Bass home by the Baptist
women, with the blessing
led by Mrs. Alex Hinoiosa of
the Methodist Church.
The program entitled "A
Future and a Hope" began
with the call to worship
received by all the over
thirty women present: "Let
not your heart envy sinners,
but continue in the fear of the
Lord all day. Surely there is
a future, and your hope will
not be cut off." Proverbs
23:17-18.
The opening prayer was
followed by a hymn, "The
Church's One Foundations"
sung by all the women.
Scripture passages were
read by Mrs. Boone
LaGrance.GE, Mrs. Adela
Gutierrez, and Mrs. Alex
Hinojosa. Roger Williams
presented a devotional on
future and hope, then ac-
companied Mrs. Glen
Granger on the Piano as
Mrs. Granger sang "The
Lord's Prayer."
The Missionary Message
was given by Mrs. Larry
Cuyler, missionary from
Mexico, who showed slides
of the work done by her and
her family in the interior of
Mexico. She stressed the
physical and spiritual needs
of the people. Following the
closing prayer, the church
members of each church
decided to gather many
items of use for the
missionaries in Mexico.

mentioned, Coach Cynthia
Alaniz and ten of her 7th
and 8th grade Cheerleaders
launched the '77 campaign
with a "Bucket B-igade"
from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in
which over $70.00 was
raised; they are shown
below.

The Texas State Teachers Association is urging
the public to join with the 140,000 members of
TSTA in the nationwide observance of American
Education Week November 13-19. Many Texas
public schools are expected to offer special
programs and demonstrations during the special
week in keeping with the theme, "Working
Together for Education." American Education
Week, observed annually since 1921, seeks to
encourage local citizen support and active par-
ticipation in the improvement of education. This
year's observance will stress the joint efforts of
teachers, students, and parents to increase public
awareness of schools goals, problems, and ac-
complishments.
A little drum major twirled in to the lives of
Mr. and Mrs. Juan Ruben Galindo on Monday,
October 24, at 8:15 a.m. Jessica Galindo weighed 7
lbs., 1% oz. on her arrival at Ramirez-Gonzalez
Family Clinic. The family lives in Roma.
The effort at PAU to organize an alumni
association with 500 charter members is moving
ahead at full speed. Members have been recruited
from throughout the Rio Grande Valley and
Texas, with one . mber joining from
Massachusetts. Initial members from Rio Grande
City are Enedina G. Garza, Felicia Garza Garza,
Wilifrido Garza, Rafael Trevino Jr. and Jose M.
Villarreal. If you wish to sign up, call Mrs. H.P.
Guerra III or Javier Margo.
A little football player made his first touchdown
at Ramirez-Gonzalez Family Clinic on Wed-
nesday, October 26. Scoring at 11:40 a.m. was 7 lb.,
5 oz. Juan Simon Martinez, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Joel Martinez of Roma.
The University of Texas College of Business
Administration awarded Bachelor of Business
Administration degrees to 373 students at the
close of the 1977 summer session. The list of
graduates included Minerva Elena Carrera of Rio
Grande City.
It's a boy! Mr. and Mrs. Roberto L. Escobar are
the proud parents «f a baby boy. Their son was
born at McAllen General Hospital on Thursday, '
October 27. The Escobars live in Rio Grande City.
It's a girl! Mr. and Mrs. Guadalupe Villarreal
are the proud parents of a baby girl. Their
daughter was born on Thursday, October 27, at
McAllen General Hospital. The Villarreal family
makes their home in Roma.
A workshop for 4-H leaders and parents to
provide training for Method Demonstrations is set
for November 12 in Falfurrias, starting at 10:00
a.m. The program will include techniques of
collecting material, writing a script, preparing
posters, proper ways to actually perform the
demonstration, and appropriate demonstration
subjects. T.V. video tapes of state-winning
demonstrations will be shown.
Saturday, October 29, was s special day for
several Starr County couples. Mr. and Mrs.
Epigmenio Gonzalez have a brand new baby girl
born on that day. Their daughter made her arrival
at McAllen General Hospital. TTie family resides
in La Grulla.
Mr. and Mrs. Servando Martinez have a son
born on October 29 at Ramirez-Gonzalez Family
Clinic. Eloy weighed in at 7 lbs., 13 ozs. on his 3:50
a.m. arrival. The Martinez family lives in Rio
Grande City.
Several Starr County students were elected by
their clubs at Texas A&I University to serve as
officers for the Fall semester. Rosalina Carrera of
Rio Grande City is serving as secretary of the
Catholic Student Club. Terry Cruz of Delmita was
elected vice-president of the Dietetics Association.
Jorge Luis Solis has a brand new baby sister!
Erika Rae was born on Sunday, October 30, in
Freeport at 1:345 p.m. weighing 7 lbs., 12 ozs.
There to greet her were her proud parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Reynaldo Solis. The proud grand-
mothers are Mrs. Adela Guerrero of Rio Grande
City and Mrs. Socorro Solis of Grulla.
Trick or treat! It was a treat for Mr. and Mrs.
Juan Caro when their son was born on Halloween^
Monday, October 31. He made his arrival at
McAllen General Hospital. The family lives in Rio
Grande City.
Don't forget the Tupperware Bingo set for this
Sunday night, November 13, at the K.C. Hall.
Sponsored by the Early Childhood Center PTA,
the bingo will begin at 7:00 p.m., and the public is
welcome.
Dr. and Mrs. Joe D. Ibanez are the proud
parents of a baby girl. Kathaleen Evangeline was
born at Bays Shore Hospital in Pasadena on
Tuesday, November 1, at 12:45 p.m. She weighed
7V« pounds. Big brother Kenny, 6, is proud of the
new arrival, as are the grandparents, Mrs. Kina
Villarreal of Rio Grande City and Mrs. Kay Moses
and Dr. Kent Upchurch. The Ibanez family lives in
San Antonio.
