Doctor Studies Cancer Causes
THE RIO GRANDE HERALD THRUSDA Y, NOVEMBER 24,1977 PAGE I
In an article by Frank
Rauscher, Jr. M.D. Scien-
tist, a former head of the
National Cancer Institute
who took up his duties as
Senior Vice-President for
Reasearch of the American
Cancer Society on November
1,1976, the doctor states that
he does not believe that all
cancer can be prevented on
the basis of the present
knowied^. However, he is
an activist, not a defeatist.
"We must let people know
that its not their inherent
fate to develop cancer
simply because of something
they're people, "he says"
about 90 per cent of cancers
occur because of something
we do, eat, drink, or smoke.
About 50 per cent of cancer
can be controlled by per-
sonal decision—like not
smoking for example. But
the other 40 per cent are
beyond the control of in-
dividuals. This is where
regulatory agencies have to
protect people—like the
National Institute of Oc-
cupational Safety and
Health, and the En-
vironmental Protection
Agency."
