city's red-light district,
where perverts, pushers,
and prostitutes menaced his
existence. Yet always, as his
inspiring book shows, he
vowed that he would follow
his destiny and see the
world. In liis teens, he did
just that, joining the Navy
and traveling to the Far
East. After his term was up,
he worked for a construc-
tion firm with important
responsibilities in Vietnam.
In the 1960's just as the
war was heating up, Rafael-
although a civilian-soon
found himself in the thick of
the combat as he journeyed
through Vietnam on
assignments for his firm.
Firefights with the Viet Cong
and narrow escapes from
burning villages marked his
existence as he did his duty.
In one heroic episode, he
defended a female American
volunteer worker against the
depredations of his fellow
Americans. As 'he war
wound down, Rafael re-
turned to the States with
his Vietnamese wife and
their children, a man much
beloved and admired by his
friends and collegues.
SURVIVAL: MY LIFE EN
LOVE AND WAR is the very
moving true story of a man
who overcame life's ob-
stacles to follow his star.
