Starr County Challenge
4-Hers Attend Meet
This last weekend was
parade time in the Rio
Grande Valley. Charro Days
had four parades scheduled
for their annual week-long
celebration in Brownsville,
lome of which were called
off because of weather, and
Mission held its annual
Citrus Parade and Fiesta
last weekend also.
Several lovely young
ladies from Starr County
participated as royalty in the
Citrus parade, and two Starr
County high school bands
also took part. They all did
an excellent job and
represented the county well.
Saturday's Citrus Parade,
always a "Biggy", also
featured numerous floats,
many local and county
dignitaries, U.S.
Congressman Kika de la
Garza as Grand Marshall,
and singer Freddy Fender as
parade marshal!. Literally
thousands of people from
throughout the valley lined
up along the several mile
long parade route to view the
spectacle.
Starr County youth will be
honored at the annual Youth

Fair parade scheduled for
Saturday, March 4, at 10:00
a.m. in Rio Grande City. Its
theme is "Starr County
Resources for Progress,"
chosen to highlight our
people, products, and
culture.
Why not make this year's
Starr County Youth Fair
Parade a "biggy" in the
valley? Starr County has
a lot to offer, and we need to
brag a little. We need all
local bands and out-of-
county bands as well, lots of
floats, cars, and trucks,
representing the
organizations of our county
and stressing the theme. We
also need an extra dose of
cooperation and support.
What do we have to lose? a
little time and effort. And
what do we have to gain?
trophies for top bands and
cash prizes of $100, $60 and
$40 for top floats, not to
mention the credit to our
community th&t such a
parade would bring and the
tribute to our people and
resources that it would
represent.
Talk to your schoolmates,
co-workers, or fellow club
members and drum up
something to enter in this
parade which annually
honor* our youth and kicks
off a day dedicated to
acknowledging their efforts
and skills. We could use
clowns, bicycling or walking
groups, and novelty
vehicles. Use your
imagination, do your own
thing, but take part! Please
contact Parade Chairman
Tissa Peterson at 487-2151 or
487-2819 with your plans for
entering this, the biggest and
best parade in the thirteen
year history of the fair.
All Starr County 4-H Clubs
were represented in
Falfurrias Saturday,
January 21 at the Adult
leaders and 4-H Council
members conference,
reports Yolanda Scrivner,
County Extension Agent.
During the conference the
group met for an adult
leaders association meeting
and the district council
meeting. Reports were given
on state and national con-
ferences attended by the
group. Schedules of future
training programs
scholarships, and upcoming
district events were
discussed.
Those who attended were
Mrs. John Butcher, Adult
Leader, from Falcon 4-H
club; Veronica Gonzalez,
district officer-Falcon 4-H;
Jerry de la Garza, district
council member from Roma
4-H; Willie Rodriguez,
district council member,
from Starr Grande 4-H;
Dillia Montalvo county
council member, from San
Isidro 4-H; and Mrs. Julieta
Montalvo, adult leader from
San Isidro 4-H.
The group also received
additional information on
the 1978 record book
requirements. Ed Koliba,
district 4-H specialist had a
short presentation on what is
required of a state winning
record book.

Blan ca Alaniz In Parade
Democratic attorney
general candidate Mark
White has announced the
appointment of Reynaldo
Alaniz & Randall Nye as
coordinators for Starr
County.
"Mark White has
demonstrated during his
four-year tenure as the
Secretary of State that he
understands the feelings of
Texans about their govern-
ment. He knows that the
people want elected officials
who are competent and
cautious with the taxpayer's
money," said Alaniz.
"During his term he
returned more than $4
million to the state treasury
Local
Policeman
Shot
Pedro Solis, 24, a Grulla
man employed as a police
officer in the city of Roma-
ics Saenz, was shot in the
leg at Adolfo's Place Sunday
at approximately 10 p.m.
At 1:30 p.m. Tuesday
Police Chief Max Habacker
said that as of that time no
suspects were in custody. He
said that according to his
investigation one man was
involved in the shooting.
Habacker said he was
going to the Starr County
District Attorney's office
later Tuesday afternoon to
try to obtain a warrant for
the arrest of the individual.
because of the efficient and
frugal operation of his office.
Such careful management
and administration is too
often lacking in government
and I think that such actions
should be rewarded," Alaniz
added.
"White has clearly shown
that he stands on his own two
feet and is independent of
any special interest group. I
support him because I know
he will follow through on any
pledges he makes to the
voters, " stated Alaniz.
White served longer than
any of his predecessors in
the state's highest appointed
office. He was also the first
Texan ever chosen as the
president of the National
Association of Secretaries of
State.
