Wildlife Book
To Be Available
For many years thousands
of Texans have raved about
the quality of the
photographs used in Texas
Parks and Wildlife
magazine. Soon it will be
possible to get a book
featuring hundreds of these
pictures.
The book TEXAS
WILDLIFE will be published
in April of this year by the
Texas A&M University
Press. The hard-backed, 192
page book contains 232
beautifully reproduced
plates of 148 species of Texas
wildlife. The pictures are
selected from the pages of
Texas Parks and Wildlife,
magazine and sup-
plemented by the work of
several highly skilled
freelance photographers.
Of course, the wildlife
pictured in this volume
doesn't come near the total
number of mammals, birds,
reptiles and amphibians that
can be found in Texas. More
than 540 species of birds
have been identified in the
state and this is three-
fourths of the number found
in the entire United States.
The illustrations do,
however, show the wide
variety of wildlife found in
Texas.
These pictures range from
the ringtail to the roseate
spoonbill, from the
pronghorn to the pintail and
from the hognosed snake to
the roadrunner. Some of the
plates feature wildlife babies
and others some of the rare
animals found in the state.
Several of the animals are on
the endangered species list.
The introduction to the
book is written by David
Baxter (Editor, Texas Parks
and Wildlife), Ted Clark
(Director, Wildlife Divisioni
and John Jefferson
(Director, Information and
Education Division). The
preface is by Dr. James G.
Teer (Head of the Depart-
ment of Wildlife
Management at A&M). Dr.
Teer was once a field
biologist for the Parks and
Wildlife Department and
knows Texas wildlife as few
people do.
TTiis is a MUST book for
lovers of Texas wildlife and
can be ordered from: Texas
A&M University Press,
Drawer C, College Station,
Texas 77843. The cost is
$22.50 plus Tax and the book
number is 0996047X - Title:
TEXAS WILDLIFE.
