The Rio Grand City Area
World Service Appeal began
recetly and will end on
January 31. The World
Service Appeal is an annual
compaign conducted by
Seventh-day Adventist
churches since 1980. Funds
help support Adventist
welfare, disaster relief,
educational, medical and
mission work in 190 coun-
tries.
Adventists in Texas this
year spent $22,000 i n Wichita
Falls for 10,000 blankets,
towels, washcloths, along
with distributing tons of food
and clothing. Assistance
was also given to flood
victims in Houston, Conroe,
Alvin, Livingston and
Dickinson.
All representatives for the
campaign will be identified,
unpaid Seventh-day Ad-
ventist volunteers. By using
volunteers and already
existing channels for han-
dling the funds, the church is
able to eliminate overhead
expenses. All money goes
to further the church's
humanitarian activities.
Contributions are
allocated to local, state,
national and international
programs according to
needs. Overseas the church
supports mission schools,
leper colonies, clinics,
medical launches,
emergency air service,
dispensaries, hospitals and
relief units that are often the
only facilities available to
thousands of needy persons.
The annual World Service
Appeal is the only public
appeal for funds made by the
Adventist church. Each
year approximately 10
percent of the total budget
for Adventist world welfare
programs is received
through community World
Service Appeal.

Food Stamp Dollars
Boost U.S. Economy
Food stamp shoppers
bought over $6.4 billion
worth of food with food
stamps this year, according
to Carol Tucker Foreman,
assistant secretary of
agriculture for food and
consumer services. This
means that the poor spent $3
billion more on food in 1979
than they would have
without the food stamp
program.
Food stamp dollars benefit
U.S. food retailers and
farmers, while helping to
feed the nation's hungry,
Foreman said today.
In a report on the
economic effects of food
>
stamps, the agriculture
department said spending
for food as a result of the
stamps increased the in-
come of food processors and
distributors by about $1.4
billion.
Farm income increased by
nearly $1 billion because of
the increased spending
brought on by food stamps in
1979, according to the report
by the U.S. Department of
Agriculture's Food and
Nutrition Service.
Overall, the value of food
stamps issued in 1978 was 3.9
percent of the total sales of
food through retail stores for
home use, USDA reported.
Foreman said a $1 billion
cut in food stamp benefits
next year would cost farm-
ers $'.40 million in income.
Food distributors-including
processors, packers,
wholesalers and retailers-
would lose about $210
million, and food ex-
penditures would decrease
by $350 million, in spite of the
fact that stamp users would
substitute some of their own
money for the stamps cut. i
