Dove Hunting Prospects Unpredictable As Usual
When the North Zone opening day for
mourning dove hunting rolls around on Sept.
1, hunters will again play the guessing game
as to where the capricious birds will decide
to fly.
Overall, Texas Parks and Wildlife
Department biologists believe prospects for
the upcoming season are generally good.
Dove Program Leader Ron George said
that field biologists in many areas of the
state are reporting sightings of significant
numbers of doves, and he added that
another plus factor is an estimated increase
of 4.8 percent in the breeding population
index in the central management unit states
to the north of Texas.
In general, George believes the best
/
mourning dove hunting region is a north-
south swath of the state bounded roughly on
the west by Vernon, Abilene, San Angelo
and Del Rio, and on the east by Interstate
Highway 35 from Fort Worth South to Del
Rio. Several counties southwest of San
Antonio, including Uvalde, Medina, Frio,
LaSalle and McMullen, are a traditional
mourning dove hunting hotspot.
This year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service has standardized season lengths for
all managements units at 70 days, which
gives Texas hunters 10 more hunting days
than they were allowed last season. In the
North Zone, the change will allow a winter
season set for Jan. 1-10, 1983, in addition to
the Sept. 30 regular season.
In the South Zone, the season will be Sept.
20-Nov. 12, 1982 and Jan. 1-16, 1983. In
counties having a white-winged dove season
the first segment of the mourning dove
season will end on Nov. 8.
The daily bag limit for mourning doves
remains unchanged at 12 per day and 24 in
possession. Bag limits for white-winged
doves is 10 per day and 20 in possession.
Hunters in counties with a whitewing season
will be allowed to take a daily limit of both
whitewing and mourning doves during the
Sept. 4-5, 11-12 season.
Shooting hours for mourning doves is 30
minutes before sunrise to sunset. In
counties offering a whitewing season,
shooting hours during that season will be
noon to sunset. (See Map).

Oil wells pump continuously, irrigation pumps are
seasonal. The cooperative must forecast demand
with a high degree of accuracy so there's adequate
power for both.
Because the Public Utilities Commission requires
cooperatives to base their rates on the cost of
delivering electric services, sporadic high demand,
especially during periods of peak usage, requires a
higher rate. But it will never be a penny higher than it
has to be. That's a promise we've kept for more than
