She was one of ten women named
as most outstanding in their fields
by the San Antonio Express-News.
The ten women will be honored
Saturday with a reception.
Vasquez is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Victoriano Vasquez, Sr.,
of La Casita. She was born in
Mexico, but grew up in La Casita.
While growing up, she worked as a
migrant in Washington, Michigan,
and West Texas At age 16, she
enrolled in Mount Sacred Heart
School in San Antonio and was a
nun for 20 years.
In 1979, she left the convent and
began working at Kelly Air Force
Base. She spent a number of years
at Mount Sacreo Heart as a
teacher. In 1975, Vasquez received
a Bachelor of Arts degree from
Incarnate Word College, and in
1979 received her master's degree
in Marriage and Family
Counseling.
Vasquez started in government
service as a GS-5 Hispanic
Employment Program manager at
Kelly Air Force Base. She cur-
rently holds a GS-12 grade. Col.
Hector Cuellar, who nominated
Vasquez as an Outstanding Woman
in government, called her "an
extremely dedicated and in-
novative professional."
Cuellar added, "Her most signif-
icant contribution has been the
establishment of an informa-
tion/communication system which
is second to none," at the large
Randolph military complex.
Vasquez is also active in San
Antonio community groups. She is
a board member of the Bexar
County Women's Center. She is
also a member of the YWCA Board
of Directors, and is a board
member of the Judson High
Cosmetology Department. That
department commended her with a
gold pin and certificate of
achievement.
Also, Vasquez served as first
vice-president for the Randolph
AFB's chapter of Federally
Employed Women until August of
last year.
In May 1984, Vasquez was
married to Larry Gillen.

The Pan American Round Table
of Rio Grande City-Roma held its
regular meeting on Jan 8 at the
Fort Ringgold Motor Inn. Alma G.
Gonzalez, Director, presided.
Mrs. Diana Shaffer introduced
the following student guests:
Miss Carmen Martinez is the
17-year-old daughter of Mrs.
Josefina Martinez. A senior at Rio
Grande City High School, Carmen
is a very active member of the
Rattler Band in which she has
achieved the following: (1) an
award in the Six Flags over Texas
Music Festival in Dallas, (2)
awards in solo and ensemble, (3)
member of the all-regional band
for four years and of the wind
ensemble for four years.
She is presently one of the drum
majors. She is a member of the
Student Council and national man-
ager of the band. She has been an
A student for four years. Her plans
are to attend Texas A&I University
and pursue a career in economics.
Norma Reyna is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Silvestre Reyna of
Rio Grande City. A senior at
R.G.C. High School, Norma is
proud to be one of the drum majors
of the Rattier band. Norma has
been a member of the Student
Council for four years. She served
as class secretary both her
freshman and sophomore years.
She was a member of the
National Honor Society in which
she served as secretary. Norma
has been a member of the Rattler
Marching Symphonic Band for one
year and of the wind ensemble
Band for three years. As first chair
flute player, she has obtained first
place medals for solos and
ensembles and has made it to the
all-regional band her junior and
senior years.
An A&B Honor Roll student.
Norma is in the top five percent of
her class. She recently received a
$200 scholarship from the Dunn
Scholarship Fund. She hopes to
attend the University of Texas and
pursue a career in medicine
Alberto Guerrero is the 17-year-
old son of Mr. and Mrs Raul
Guerrero. A senior at Rio High.
Alberto has been a member of the
debate team for two years, and
captain of the boys' tennis team for
two years. He has also participated
in U.I.L. Math Number Sense

team, Alberto competed in the
Computer Science Division for two
years He is a member and captain
of the Mastermind Team and of the
National Honor Society. An A&B
student, Alberto has been a
member of the Honor Roll during
his high school career. He plans to
attend Rice University and major
in electrical engineering.
Mrs. Gonzalez introduced the
following guests: Mrs. Corina V.
Taylor, Mrs. Elma M. Carrizo,
Mrs Richard Scohy, Mrs Mariely
Cojina-Quezada, Mrs. Josie
Guerra, and Dr. Art Linsky.
Mrs. Nelda Laurel announced
that the program for the following
month would be on Colombia and
members in charge would be Mr.
Jorge I. Guerra, Mrs. H P. Guerra,
Jr., and Mrs. Alfredo Laurel.
Mariely Cojina-Quezada was wel-
comed as a new member of the
Table.
Dr. Arthur Linsky served as
guest speaker for the evening. His
topic was on Chile taken from a
personal point of view. A Fulbright
lecturer for St. John's University in
New York, Dr. Linsky was invited
to speak on Tests and Measure-
ments at a teacher's college in
Santiago. Chile.
Although he spoke several lan-
guages, Dr. Linsky found himself
learning the Spanish language and
communicating with the Chilean
students. He recalls that the
Chilean's points of view were quite
different from his own. He admits
that a very exciting part of his tour
was getting to know these people;
moreover, through his personal
growth and social consciousness he
was able to understand them.
He shared several artifacts in-
cluding rugs, wooden stirrups,
leather cuff links, and a belt He
ended by saying he had been there
not onlv to teach but to learn
