Rio Seniors To Graduate Friday
'^A ■■
Pictured above are the Rio High valedictorian, Dario
Narro, left; and salutatorian, Rolando Alberto Guerrero.
Seniors at Rio Grande City High
School will have 12 years of work
and study rewarded when they
receive their diplomas in com-
mencement exercises at 8 p.m
Friday night at Rattler Stadium.
Rio High Principal Ruben Saenz
indicated that commencement
exercises would be moved indoors
to the Auditorium, if bad weather
comes about. Should adverse
weather take place, each student
will be limited to four tickets.
Saenz noted that 1983 was the only
year during his tenure as principal
that bad weather affected a
graduation exercise.
The two highest ranking stu-
dents, Dario E. Narro,
valedictorian; and Rolando Alberto
Guerrero, salutatorian, will be the
featured speakers.
Narro, who has a four-year
average of 99.9000, is the son of Dr
and Mrs Ramiro Narro. Guerrero,
the son of Mrs. Enedina Guerrero
and the late Mr. Ramiro Guerrero,
has a four-year average of 97.0000.
Saenz said that the class of 198*5
was a good one, adding that "this
was probably the first senior class
affected by House Bill 72 This was
a more task-oriented class.''
Saenz stressed, "The kids made
wise use of the curriculum as fitted
their needs Students took advan-
tage of advanced and vocational
courses. The curriculum has been
used wisely by this class in
preparing for the future."
A Rio High counselor indicated
that preliminary surveys show that
47 percent of the candidates for
graduation have plans to continue
with post-secondary education, and
another four percent plan to enter
the military. Forty nine percent
either have employment or will be
seeking employment.
Saenz added, "I'm pleased with
the adjustments that this class
made. It will not be as hard for
future classes."

Senior track sensation Rey
Ramirez has put together a record
of athletic accomplishments,
mainly in track, that has brought
statewide rewards and recognition
to both him and Rio Grande City
High School.
Ramirez is (he 1986 4-A state
oh; mpM >1 in the 200 r < tors having
registered a time of 21.J in the
recent state meet in Austin
Earlier, in regional competition
at San Antonio, he set the regional
record in the 200 with a 21.26 time,
and was the anchor on the
mile-relay team that also set a
regional record, with a 3:17 45 He
also won the 100-meters with a
10.89 time.
Ramirez has signed a letter of
intent to run varsity track at the
University of Texas at Austin He
says a cherished goal is to
someday compete in the Olympic
Games.
Rio High Athletic Director
Ramiro Villegas said of Ramirez,
"Rey is one of those athletes that
comes along once in a long time.
He's extremely talented, and has
the potential to continue excelling
in college, and hopefully, he will
accomplish one of his goals, to one
day compete in the Olympics "
Villegas added, "All the records
he set throughout the Valley speak
for him and his performance. He
has performed in a manner that
has brought outstanding honors to
him. to his family, to his school,
and to his community. We're very
proud of him "
Villegas said 'hat Ramirez is
separated from the good track
performers because "Rey is a
natural; he's got outstanding
athletic ability. He's got a lot of
natural ability and has outstanding
work habits
Varsity track coach Danny
Vasquez said, "He's very depen-
dable, very coachable, and very
consistent in his workout habits,
and a great leader by exam-
ple...His overall dedication to
athletics is the big difference
between him and many other good
athletes "
Vasquez emphasized, "The
overwhelming desire for success is
what drives him. The Olympics;
that's his ultimate goal Rey truly
convinced me of his dedication

The track coach added, "Rey
does not quit bein an athlete when
he leaves the fiekihouse. I had him
for two years in the classroom, and
he's as good a student in the
classroom as he is on the athletic
field. There's no doubt in my mind
that he will continue to bring honor
to Rio Grande City."
Coach Vasquez stressed that
Ramirez "steadily improved from
the start (of his three-plus years in
the varsity-track program). The
fact that he ran summer track
really helped him also."
Rio High principal Ruben Saenz
said, "We definitely feel he has the
potential to succeed academically
at the college level. With his
tremendous perserverance and
goal orientation in athletics, we
feel he'll succeed by applying that
to academics...One of his greatest
qualities is that Rey has remained
a very, down io-earth, humble
student."
Ramirez was also an ac-
complished varsity football player,
winning honors for his play as a
receiver and defensive back his
junior and senior years He was a
standout on the 1984 varsity district
champion team that thrashed
Beeville in bi-district action before
being narrowly defeated by New
Braunfels in regional play
Last season, his gridiron perfor-
mance was highlighted by the
67-yard reverse he took for a
touchdown against La Joya. and
Rey Ramirez, second from right at Friday's All-Sports
Banquet, has been a track sensation throughout his high
school career, gaining recognition throughout the Valley
and state. To his left are fellow mile-relay runners Jesus

27, 1968, in Camargo. and has lived
in the Rio Grande City area the
past three years He is the son of
Mr and Mrs, Reynaido Ramirez,
and they currently reside in the
Santa Cruz area.
Ramirez said he has been inter-
ested in track since "around third
or fourth grade." He added that "1
just ran for fun," and didn't keep
up with track on television or in
newspapers.
Ramirez started competing in the
sixth grade at Ringgold Jr. High,
