The Halo-Flight helicopter ambulance service of Falfurrias, affiliated with the
Brooks County EMS, demostrated the capabilities of its helicopter ambulances
near Starr County Memorial Hospital on Monday.
Ambulance
ducts available on board, said
Dempsey, are virtually all types of
cardiac care equipment, including
monitors, a defibrillator, an
external pacemaker, and virtually
all types of needed drugs.
Dempsey said, "We have whole
blood we can fly down. We have all
the drugs needed. We're set for one
patient; we have two-patient capa-
bility."
Other available items and pro-
ducts, indicated Dempsey, is a
transport isolette, trauma kits,
splinting kits, telemetry, oxygen,
whole blood, an IV pump, IV fluids,
and an air-oxygen mix.
Dempsey said that the cost of
operating such a system for an
KMS would be $825,000, including
payment of paramedics. He in-
dicated that patient billing under
such a system should come to
(ontinmd From I*4«n«- I
about $600,000.
Dempsey stressed that the
balance of funding comes from
grants and donations by various
foundations He said. "Foundation
funding has done real well by us."
Dempsey indicated that funding
from various foundations has al-
ready more than covered any
shortfall for this year
Dempsey said. "The only place
that hasn't had this is South
Texas...This service was started
Oct. 15. We're a non-profit cor-
poration, and part of the Brooks
County EMS Our goal is to service
the EMS's, and the regional
hospitals We're licensed with the
Texas Department of Health."
Dempsey indicated that the
air-ambulance service would be
most likely to be used in cases of
serious accidents and also hospital
transfers, especially for babies and
cardiac patients.
Dempsey added, "We 'with a
helicopter) can go in at about any
place. It's your call as to which
hospital patients will be trans-
ferred to."
He said that State Sen. Carlos
Truan of Corpus Christi, State Rep.
Irma Range! of Kingsville, and
U.S. Congressman Kika De La
Garza "have been real strong
supporters of this." For his part,
Dempsey contended, "I think we've
done something good for South
Texas."
DEmpsey said that Halo-Flight
helicopters are equipped with a
Loren computerized navigation
system that pre-programs latitudes
and longtitudes, magnetic com-
passes, and navigational equipment
that hones in on airports
