To TAC Board
Harvey Davis, executive director of the Texas State Soil
and Water Conservation Board in Temple, addresses
Thursday's meeting of the South Texas Association of
Soil and Water Conservation Districts in Rio Grande
City.

Hold Rio Meeting
Precinct Four County Commis-
sioner Reynaldo "Moreno" Alaniz
of San Isidro has been appointed to
the Texas Association of Counties'
County Government Risk Man-
agement Board of Trustees for
1988.
Alaniz was informed of the
appointment in a letter from Dallas
County Treasurer Bill Melton,
president of the Texas Association
of Counties. The Board of Directors
of TAC approved Melton's recom-
mendation that Alaniz be appointed
to the Risk Management Board
Melton indicated in the letter,
"The chairman of the TAC County
Government Risk Management
Board of Trustees will schedule
various meetings throughout the
year Please let me emphasize the
importance of the role that you and
the other trustees play in the
success of the Texas Association of
Counties. Your leadership is im-
perative to our overall success, and
1988 will be a pivotal year in the
history of the Texas Association of
Counties."
Melton concluded, "TAC is
purchasing its own building and
will become a focal point for all
county government with a larger,
stronger staff, dedicated to the
principles of county government
and enhancing, in particular, the
salesmanship of our respective
TAC Fund Programs.
KC's Hold Annual
Free Throw Contest
The South Texas Association of
Soil and Water Conservation Dis-
tricts held a meeting and luncheon
Thursday at the Fort Ringgold
Motor Inn in Rio Grande City.
The meeting was called to order
by President Kenneth Culpepper of
Pleasanton. Starr County Judge
J M. Martinez Jr., gave the
welcome.
Among new business acted upon
was a report on the South Texas
Plant Materials Center, and ap-
pointment of a nominating com-
mittee for officer elections in
September.
Also, the signing of a new
memorandum of understanding
concerning the South Texas Plant
Materials Center was approved.
Reports were given by the
following officials: C.F. "Dick"
Schendel of Goliad, vice-chairman
of the Texas State Soil and Water
Conservation Board; Donald Swann
of Taft, director of Area III of the
Texas Association of Soil and
Water Conservation Districts.
Harvey Davis of Temple, execu-
tive director of the Texas State Soil
and Water Conservation Board;
and Harry "Wes" Oneth of Temple,
State Conservationist of the USDA
Soil Conservation Service.
After lunch, those present at the
meeting took a tour of Starrco
Farms east of Rio Grande City.
The Rio Gra ide City Knights of
Columbus held their annual Free
Throw Shooting Contest this past
Saturday at the Ringgold Jr High
Gym.
The contest was for boys and
girls ages 11-14, in four separate
divisions for both sexes There
were a total of 42 participants in
the contest.
The winners are indicated as
follows:
• Eleven Year-Old Boys, Jeremy
Barba; 11-Year-Old Girls, Teresa
Salinas.
• Twelve Year-Old Boys, Jose G.
Garza; 12-Year-Old Girls, Sonia
Espinoza.
• Thirteen Year-Old Boys, Raul
Garcia; 13-Year-Old Girls, Sara
Salinas.
• Fourteen Year-Old Boys,
Eulogio Vela.
These winners in Saturday's Free
Throw Shooting Contest will be
advancing to regional competition
in Mercedes in the near future
Gladiators

point opportunities, one by Manuel
Alvarez and one by Omar Canales.
Roma's scoring went as follows:

Bobby Garcia, 6; Ervay Gonzalez,
4; Frankie Guerra, 1. Jaime
Gonzalez paced the Tigers with 18
points and Eddie Churchill added

The Gladiators, now 23-6 on the
season, played the La Joya Coyotes
at home Tuesday night They will
finish their regular season on the
road Friday night against the Los
Fresnos Falcons.
In the state 4-A playoffs, the
Gladiators will be playing the
second place team from 15-4A,
probably late next week.
