Rattlers Defeated Twice In Basketball
The Rio Grande City Rattler
varsity basketball team was de-
feated twice last week by decisive
margins.
On last Tuesday night, the
Laredo Nixon Mustangs defeated
Rio 82-50 in Rio Grande City. Nixon
led 21-8 after one period, 42-26 at
halftime, and 63-36 after three
periods.
Coach Ricardo Lopez com-
mented, "We had some early
turnovers and they took control of
the game. They (the Mustangs)
didn't make too many mistakes."
Lopez added, "They shot well
from both the inside and outside.
Their inside game was very
effective with (Luis) Gonzalez and
(Mick) Cruz and (Jorge) Oliveros
shot well from the outside. They're
a real good shooting team."
About Rio's play, Lopez com-
mented, "I thought Marin Lopez
picked up some of the slack, along
with Jose Balderas. They (Nixon)
shut down Dave Jones real well.

Most of our success was off our set
offense. Some baskets were off
offensive rebounds."
The coach continued, "They held
us in check pretty good on our fast
break. They ran a full-court press
that caused us a lot of turnovers."
The Rattlers were 19 of 53, or 36
percent, from the field, including
zero for three from three-point
range. Rio was 12 of 21 from the
foul line, while Nixon was 18 of 28.
The Rattlers were severely ham-
pered by 29 turnovers.
Marin Lopez led Rio in scoring
with 14 points. Ricardo Gutierrez
added 12 and Jose Balderas poured
in 8. Luis Gonzalez paced Nixon
with 21 points, and Jorge Oliveros
and Mick Cruz added 15 and 13
points, respectively.
For the Rattlers, Dave Jones and
Enrique Garcia both fouled out of
the game.
Jones, Marin Lopez, and Gutier-
rez each hauled down six rebounds
for Rio. Jones provided three
assists to two for Balderas.
Balderas executed six steals to five
for Lopez.
On Friday night, the Mission
Eagles defeated Rio 68-38 in
Mission. Mission led 14-10 alter a
ruggedly contested first quarter,
but went on a second quarter spurt
to take a 34-20 lead into in-
termission. At the end of three
quarters, Mission held a 55-29 edge.
Lopez commented, "We started
off pretty well. We were playing
real good defense. Things started
turning around right at the end of
the first quarter, when it was 11-10.
They hit a three-point shot right at
the buzzer."
Lopez added, "We couldn't get
the ball in to whom we wanted
to...We hit most of our shots from
the outside. Mission had good
outside shooting, but also had a
good inside game. They outre-
bounded us, especially on the
offensive boards."
The Rattlers were 15 of 45, or 33
percent, from the field, including 3
of 9 from three-point range. Rio
was 5 of 10 from the foul line, and
Mission was only 5 of 16 in their
free throw shooting. The Rattlers
were again dogged by turnovers,
committing 27 for the game.
Dave Jones paced the Rio offense
with 15 points, and Marin Lopez
added 8. Bill Harrison and Tom
Lee each poured in 14 for the
Eagles, while Roy Garcia and
Carlos Gonzalez each contributed I
10.
Jones hauled down 11 rebounds to
pace the Rattlers, and Lopez added
6. Enrique Garcia furnished two
assists to one by Jose Balderas.
Jones achieved two steals to one
for Balderas.
Lopez noted that the Rattlers
have been utilizing the talents of
players, most notably Lopez and
Balderas, from the junior varsity -
in recent games. He commented, "
"These kids are starting to leave
an impact that will be left for next
year."
After playing Laredo Martin at
home Tuesday night, the Rattlers,
now 0-12 in District 31-5A play, will
conclude their season at hotne
against the Laredo United Long-
horns on Friday night That game
will serve as Parents and Faculty
Night. |

in the First National Bank of Rio
Grande City, and that all keys to
the ballot boxes remain in the
custody of the Starr County
Sheriff's Department as has been
the custom and practice in all ■k
previous elections in this county "
In a motion filed Feb. 16, Isabel
Trevino, a candidate for County
Attorney, asked that the District
Court reaffirm the original im-
poundment order.
Trevino's motion states, "Con-
trary to the allegations made by
Romero Molina, that election
materials may be impounded only
if two or more registered voters
present affidavits alleging criminal *
conduct in connection with the
election, V.C.T.A Election Code
Section 273.001 <b) authorizes the
District Attorney to 'conduct an
investigation on his own initiative
to determine if criminal conduct
occurred in connection with an
election."
In her motion, Trevino asked that
the place of impoundment for the
election materials remain the Dis- 0
trict Clerk's Office. *"
Under the amended order worked
out Tuesday afternoon, only used <
or unused ballots, mail-in and
walk-in, will be impounded in the
vaults of the District Clerk's Office.
A hearing before Judge Garcia
on the matter had originally been
set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday after-
noon, but was delayed until about 5
p.m. that day.
Under the amended order, the
sheriff will maintain a lock and key *
to each ballot box, as will the
County Clerk's Office.
