Ice Dams Can Damage Roof —
What Causes Them and What to Do
A snowy roof with cascading icicles
at the edge can be a pretty sight, but
it can also be a symptom of a roof pro-
blem called ice cumming. Ice dams on
your roof can result in severe water
damage to the roof, insulation,
walls, and ceilings of a home.
Ice dams are causcd by heat es-
caping through the roof from the
attic and melting the underside
of the snow blanket on your roof.
The water from the melted snow
trickles down the roof surface un-
der the snow until it reaches the
eaves. Since interior heat is not
warming this lower edge of the
roof, the trickling water freezes,
forming a dam.
Water can also be forced back up
the roof and underneath the shingles
so that it leaks through the roof
sheathing. Insulation under the leak-
ing areti gets wet and loses its in-
sulating value, ceilings can get stain-
ed, plaster or plasterboard may be
ruined, and wood structural members
soak up water, fostering rot and
mildew.
Understanding what causes ice
dams is the key to clearing them up.
Typically the area near the edge of
the roof, or the entire attic, is poorly
insulated and/or the attic is inade-
quately ventilated causing heat from
the house to warm the roof enough so
that the snow melts. The eaves or ex-
treme edges of the roof remain cold
enough to refreeze the melted snow,
since they normally extend beyond
the heated area.
One method of controlling ice
dams is a "cold roof' — a roof
that remains below freezing to pre-
vent the type of thawing and freez-
ing that creates the ice dams and
backed up water.

For Health and Fitness.
Enjoy More Fruits and Vegetables
In recent years, many of the
country's top health organizations
such as the National Cancer Institute
have issued dietary recommenda-
tions that call for an increase in the
amount of vegetables and fruit in
American diets. Nevertheless, Amen
cans continue to eat fewer fruits
and vegetables than the amount
recommended for good health.
According to Linda Webb, nutri-
tionist with the makers of Wish
Bone" Lite Dressings, "Many vege
tables are rich sources of vitamin C
and beta carotene, the form of
vitamin A in plant foods. Both of
these vitamins have been associated
with a reduced risk of certain forms
of cancer. Vegetables are also ex-
cellent sources of fiber, which is also
essential for good health. In addition,
a diet rich in vegetables, fruits and
whole grains will almost always
result in weight control, since these
foods are naturally low in calories
and very filling.
With all these benefits, it makes
sense to increase the amount of
vegetables yoo eat each day. If you
don't particularly like the taste of
vegetables, it may be time to try
some new preparation techniques.
Ms. Webb offers these suggestions:
— Sprinkle vegetables with Par-
mesan cheese, melt low fat cheese on
top, or drizzle with a reduced-calorie
dressing such as Wish-Bone Lite
Ranch Dressing.
— Try for some interesting mix
tures, like zucchini with green beans
and tomatoes, lightly stir-fried and
tossed with Wish Bone Lite Italian
Dressing.
— Make a crust for vegetable
casseroles with bread crumbs, sesame
seeds, nuts or crushed corn chips for
an interesting texture and added
fiber.
— Add frozen mixed vegetables
to pasta during the last five minutes
of the pasta's cooking time. Then toss
with a lite creamy dressing like
Wish-Bone Lite Ranch.
— Blend low fat cottage cheese
or reduced-calorie mayonnaise with
a few tablespoons of your favorite lite
A cold roof is
created by thor-
oughly insulating
and ventilating the
attic. A check of your
attic may reveal in-
adequate insulation
levels or areas where
the insulation was
not pushed back far
enough into the low
areas at the eaves.
Perhaps the eave
vents have been
covered by insula-
tion, so that circu-
lation of air in the
attic is reduced.
If attic insulation is obviously in-
adequate, additional insulation
should be installed. Using a quality
product like CertainTeed Fiber Glass
Insulation will not only help prevent
ice dams but also help reduce heat
loss and save you money on your
utility bills. The attic or ceiling in-
sulation must meet today's new
energy standards for maximum
energy efficiency and prevention of
ice dams.
Once adequate insulation is in
place, attic ventilation can be im-
proved without significant heat
loss. The most common ventila-
tion method is the natural or sta-
tic ventilation system, which con-
sists of simple vent openings in
your attic.
Your attic probably has two or
more vent openings so that air can
flow in one and out the other. These
can be soffit, eave, or ridge vents, or
a combination of the three.
Regardless of the type of vents you
have, as a basic guide you should pro-
vide one square foot of vent area
salad dressing and serve with lots
of fresh cut vegetables for dipping.
— Remember that if you really
don't like most vegetables, you
can always substitute fruits. Many
fruits, particularly deep yellow and
orange fruits like cantaloupe,
peaches and apricots, as well as citrus
fruits, are also rich sources of the
same vitamins found in vegetables.
Try a fruit plate with peaches and
low fat cottage cheese for a healthy
lunch. Or toss Lite Chunky Blue
Cheese Dressing with a Waldorf
salad composed of apples, walnuts
and celery.

for each 150 square feet of ceiling
area when there is no vapor barrier
in the ceiling. When a ceiling vapor
barrier is used, provide one square
foot of vent area for each 300 square
feet of ceiling area. Ideally, 50 per-
cent of the required ventilating area
should be provided by vents located
i n the upper portion of your attic and
the balance of ventilation provided by
eave vents.
Remember, when adding insulation
to your attic, do not cover eave vent
openings. Also, maintain at least a
one inch space between insulation
and roof sheathing so that air from
the eave vents can enter the attic
space.
By properly insulating and ven-
tilating your home, you will run less
risk of ice dams. Protect your home
from winter's harsh weather
conditions.

Walk, Don't Run
Many centuries ago, a Greek
messenger died after running 26
miles from the battle at Marathon to
Athens to report the Greek victory.
As a memorial to the courage
and determination of the warrier,
that marathon run was named an
Olympic event.
Running is no longer the fastest
way to communicate, but it has
become a very popular form of exer-
cise and recreation. When you run,
you may not push your body to the
point of exhaustion and death, but
you may be injuring your body
without knowing it. Running, while
a good form of cardiovascular exer-
cise, is extremely jarring to a person's
body — An alternative exercise is
walking. Walking provides all the
bone end muscle strength of running
without the inherent risk of injury.
The shock of impact to your body
while walking is one to two times
less than that caused by running, but
the muscles still receive a vigorous
workout. Walking rivals swimming
for exercising the total body, plus
