Women's Clubs Centennial
Day Proclaimed In County
Siarr County Judge J.M
Martinez, Jr., has proclaimed April
24 as General Federation of
Women's Clubs Centennial Day in
Starr County.
The proclamation reads as
follows:
WHEREAS, The General
Federation of Women's Clubs was
founded on April 24, 1890 to
improve the quality of life ol its
members, their communities and
their nation at a time when legal
and social constraints severely
liirncd the scope of women's
interests and activities.
"In our own town ol Rio Grande
City, organizations alIiliaied with
the General Federation of Women's
Clubs since 1927. Organizations
here that arc part of this effective
volunteer women's movement
include the Florence J. Scott Study
Club and the Rio Grande City
Woman's Club.
While joining in the national
and international activities of the
General Federation of Women's
Clubs, the clubwomen of Rio
Grande City have continually
contributed to the betterment of our
community by providing
opportunities for personal skill
development, studying issues,
educating the public, stimulating
civic consciousness, training leaders
and opening avenues lor
constructive public service.
"We all have benefited from these
activities throughout the years. And
we look with confidence toward
continued mutual achievement in
the future.
"THEREFORE. I HEREBY
PROCLAIM April 24, 1990, to be
General Federation of Women's
Clubs Centennial Day in Rio
Grande City as commemoration of
the 100 years of contributions by
thai organization as well as the
effective continuing activity by the
Federation's members here on
behalf of their fellow residents.
"I urge all those living within
our border to join with the Florence
J. Scon Study Club and the Rio
Grande City Woman's Club in
observance of General Federation of
Women's Clubs Centennial Day to
recognize the achievements of the
past, activities of the present and
promise for the future of the
Federation and the clubwomen of
Rio Grande City."
Local Boy Scout Troop
Forms Two Patrols
Boy Scout Troop 93 formed two
patrols at their last meeting. One
patrol is made up of all the new
members of the troop plus one
older member who is to serve as
Guide.
The older members are making
up the other patrol. Each patrol will
have a Patrol Leader and an
Assistant Patrol Leader. Beside the
two patrols there is a Senior Patrol
Leader and an Assistant Senior
Pauol Leader.
While the troop was having their
meeting the Troop 93 Parent's
Booster Club was meeting. The
Parent's Booster Club was formed
to help the boys in the troop with
some of their projects.

The present project of the
Parent's Booster Club is helping
the boys with their expense to
summer camp near San Marcos,
Texas. The first money making
project of the Booster Club was
hold a drawing for a large Easter
Basket. One of the activities of the
meeting was to draw for the
winning of the Easter Basket.
The winner of the basket was Mr.
Roger Rodriguez of La Grulla.
Also, at the meeting the club
went on record to thank everyone
who helped with this project and lor
those who donated to this project
for the boys.

Participates In
Panama Operations
Pvt. Juan 1. Rodriguez
participated in the recent military
operations in Panama. The service
member was sent with other U.S.
military personnel to the Central
American country to assist in
operation "Just Cause," which
resulted in the ouster of Panamian
dictator, Manuel Noriega.
He is a cavalry scout with the
73rd Armor, Fort Bragg, North
Carolina. Rodriguez is the son of
Juan and Maria E. Rodriguez of 382
Old E. Sauz in Rio Grande City.
The private is a 1988 graduate of
Rio Grande City High School.
The newly reorganized Starr County Jaycees met April 3 to elect officers. Seated
from left to right are Marinela Garcia, secretary Martha (Jaytan, treasurer Nancy
Garcia, Mary Garcia, Doralisa Saenz, and D.J. Garcia. Standing from lelt to right are
Octavio Castaneda, Raul Alvarez, Jr., Community Vice-President; Baldemar (.arza.
Individual Development Vice-President; Carlos Garcia, President; Rene Montalvo,
and Frank Gutierrez.
Wheels For Life Bike-A-Thon Saturday
Calling all riders...Bike-a-thon
coordinator Mrs. Rosie Garcia is
asking Rio Grande City residents to
join the St. Jude Children's
Research Hospital "Wheel for Life"
Bike-A-Thon slated for Saturday,
April 21 at the entrance of Fort
Ringgold Campus.
This ride honors Ellen Marie, a
solid tumor patient at St. Jude.
With every spoke of the wheel,
riders become 'spokes'-men for all
the kids with cancer, like Ellen
Marie. This ride is a vital part of
the fight against childhood cancer at
St. Jude. Riders arc really needed.
They make or break a Bike-A-Thon,
said Mrs. Garcia.
Riders sign up sponsors who
promise to make a donation based
on every mile completed. All riders
turning in money will receive a
certificate. Those who raise S25
receive a certificate and a St. Jude
T-Shirt. When S75 is raised, ihe
rider receives a barrel tote bag, a
T-shirt, and a certificate.
Sponsor forms can be picked up
at 122 Ebony (behind Pizza Hut),
North Grammar, Ringgold Primary,
Roque Guerra Elementary, and
Immaculate Conception School.
The general plan, said Mrs.
Garcia, "is to have a good time
while helping a wonderful group of
children counting on our support

Jaycees Reorganizing
The newly reorganized Rio
Grande City Jaycees met April 3
and elected officers.
Jaycees International is one of the
most extensive public/community
service organizations in the
^JunLry. In the past, according to
local organizers, Starr County has
had some of the strongest chapters
in the state.
The new chapter has been formed
to supplement and develop new
youth development services among
other community development
programs.
The next meeting will be held
Thursday, April 19 at 7 p.m at El
Patio Del Rio Restaurant in Rio
Grande City. All interested persons
between the ages of 21 and 39 are
welcome.
