Starr residents play key role
in research breakthrough
A number of Starr County
residents, including personnel in the
local Starr County Health Studies
Office, have played a key role in the
breakthrough that has brought
researchers much closer to
identifying a gene believed
responsible for the high occurrcncc
of diabetes in Starr County's
Hispanic population.
Elsewhere in this edition of The
Rio Grande Herald, a separate article
explains the scientific particulars
and implications of the research
breakthrough.
Hilda Guerra, the office manager
for the Starr County Health Studies
Office that works in collaboration
with the UT-Health Science Center
in Houston, declared on Monday,
"They located the chromosome
where the gene is located. This
should mean that locating the gene
itself should not be too far away."
Guerra emphasized, "This opens a
lot of horizons, including finding
the source of such problems as
hypertension and obesity. This
should enable researchers to come
up with better types of medication."
Guerra stressed, "We thank the
many people in the Hispanic
culture that participated in these
surveys. We've done surveys in the
Valley that involved siblings (of
Starr County residents). In this
particular area, diabetes is such a
critical problem."
She noted, "Dr. Mario Ramirez
showed a lot of concern for this
problem in the 1970's, and he
brought the UT-Health Science
Center to Starr County in the early
1980s."
Maria Ofelia Saenz and her
younger sister Noemi Guerra were
among many Starr County residents
that helped in the research
undertaking. Saenz commented, "A
lot of people from throughout the
county have participated in the
study. This has been done through
the efforts of a lot of people in the
county."
She emphasized, "It's great to be
able to participate in a project that
will help numerous people. You
learn a lot through such programs.
They provide important information
about dieting and the disease itself.
To me it was very helpful. They
also emphasize the importance of
exercise."
Saenz indicated that "neither of
my parents were diabetics", but
