to leave position

The city of Irving is in the
process of deciding whether or
not to install flashing yellow lights on Northgate drive, Kathleen
Mullins Jost, transportation engineer for the city said.
Jost is currently conducting an engineering study that considers
and evaluates factors affecting traffic and pedestrian safety
"It [the study] is just about done. It is not completed yet,"
she Said.
"We look at issues warranting a flashing yellow light—the
speed of the road, what's provided now, the accident history, sight
distance, pedestrian patterns," she said.
Sight distance is how far pedestrians and moving vehicles can
see each other. Pedestrian patterns refer to how many pedestrians
use the road and where they cross, Jost said.
The study follows a serious accident involving a GSM student
on Northgate Drive. Sunita Kasliwal, who received her MBA in
health care management last Friday, was hit by a speeding truck,
Oct. 31. According to the police report, Kasliwal was knocked
unconscious and taken to Parkland Hospital.
As Kasliwal is an international student, her accident sparked
sympathetic and intensely concerned conversation in the office
of international enrollment In GSM. The general sentiment of
the conversation was the need to prevent future accidents on

Brian Borski has resigned from
his position as Student Activities
director effective Friday, Dec 17.
For the spring semester, the
administration has decided to
leave Borski's position as Student
Activities director vacant. Since
Student Activities is administered
through Student Life, John Grant,
interim dean of student services,
and Adam Todd, Student Ac-
tivities coordinator, will share the
responsibilities associated with
Borski's position.
"We are going td shift respon-
sibilities within Student Life.
We are not going to replace him
for the spring semester. Beyond
that, I have not had a chance to
talk to Mr. Bob Galecke, [senior
vice president of finance and
administration], and Dr. Frank
Lazarus, [UD president] about
which direction we are going,"
Grant said.
As Student Activities direc-
tor, Borksi is responsible for all
the programing the Student Ac-
tivities office puts on, for advising
Student Government (SG) and
Student Programming of Uni-
versity of Dallas (SPUD), and for
organizing and coordinating new
student orientation, Grant said.
After Borski's departure, Grant
will become the official advisor
for SG.
"A major part of Borski's job
was advising SG. I will take over
that; it reaches into programing.
He works with SPUD. We don't
control [SG or SPUD] but we
advise and work with them,"
Grant said.
Todd said he would take care of
other aspects of Student Activities,
including its budget and Ground-
hog; he will also manage intramu-
ral and recreational sports.
"I will assume the big things
dealing with the Student Ac-
tivities budget, being in charge of
Groundhog festivities. For right
now, they are going to try and let
me handle Student Activities,"
Todd said.
Todd's present responsibilities
include advising SPUD, organiz-
ing campus calendar events, and
heading special-interest programs
such as Great American Smoke-
Out and Alcohol Awareness. Todd
described his current position as
"essentially Brian's assistant."
Grant said the administration
might hire another intern for Stu-
dent Activities as responsibilities
are shifted around. Senior Mary-
Claire Becan is now working as an
intern for Student Activities.
"MaryClaire's position will be
there. We might add a position.
We are not sure about that. It
depends on [what Student Life
works out] with Galecke and
Lazarus," Grant said.
No decision has been made
about new student orientation,
Grant said.

Chris Friedl, Matt Heinritz,
and Hercules Tarango will receive
Bachelor of Arts degrees in
Business Leadership this semester.
The three seniors are the first
graduating class of UD's College
of Business, created in 2002.
Heinritz said many of his fellow
students have a misconception
about the Business Leadership
program.
"People think we're on a
completely different schedule or
that we take completely different
classes because we're the college
of business, but it's really similar.
We've got the same core, and
then we have the business core,®
he said.
After completing all of the
curriculum and comprehensive
exams, Heinritz said the Business
Leadership program at UD enables
students to consider in-depth the
human aspect of business.
The College of Business is
"different from a lot of business
schools in that we focus more
on the human side of business.
There's a lot of ethical and
moral stuff...we get our share
of marketing, operations, and
finance, but it really is geared
more toward developing people,"
he said.
Dr. Brian Murray, associate
dean of the College of Business,
said the business students have
