Exit lov Rocks the Gypsy Tea Room
Alan Charnock
| CONTRIBUTOR
All the way from Washington D.C,, the five
members of Eat Clov form a band with a fresh
sound and something to say. They played at the
Gypsy Tea Room in Deep Ellum on Thursday, March 15,
employing violins, synth, high energy, and witty lyrics to
pull off an entirely exciting show.
I met Brett Miederman, the bass guitarist, outside the
Gypsy and he introduced me to the band before the show
kicked off. There's Aaron Leeder on guitar, John Thayer
on drums and percussion, and beautiful twins Emily and
Susan on vocals and violin, and keys and guitar respectively.
Together they're an eclectic group, with a musicality to
reflect their makeup.
I wasn't exactly prepared to be blown away, but I should
have been. The energy, beauty, and sophistication of the
music only built as the set progressed, which was tastefully
arranged from happy mellow to high power rock. Aaron
combined rocking guitar solos with clever looping work
while John and Brett kept a steady, catchy beat. Add the
flowing strains of violin, keys, and sweet poppy vocals
from Emily and Susan. Then layer over soaring rock tones,
and inject an addictive jolt of energy to get a taste of this

band's music.
If you want a closer listen, pick up the band's latest EP,
Respond Respond, released by Livewire Recordings in
October 2006. It contains six of Exit Clov's original songs,
with lyrics addressing everything from the Middle East, to
CIA mind control, to communist dictators and the Gold
War. Reminiscent of their 90's Brit pop influences, it's a
fun, smart mix of music and words that actually think as
well as entertain. Some of the lyrical playfulness can be
found on Communist BBQ, "Quit your Stalin / Go by
your Che shirts... You know the time is Mao."
After the show I sat down for an interview, and asked
about the band name, a reference to a Samuel Beckett
character in Endgame who never leaves the stage.
"Go and do something. That's kind of what it means,
it's also anti-complacency," said Emily.
About the album name, Susan told me, "We're calling
people to respond to their situations, their lives, the album
itself. It's anti-complacent again. Go do something."
Exit Clov is playing hard and planning for a new album.
Their message is clear, their music is hip, and they're on a
campaign against complacency. Keep your ears open.

SENIOR, cont'd
directed by Matt Alexander gives viewers a taste of rural Missouri.
Well-played characters and amusing matters of small town life makes
this play humorous and thoroughly entertaining.
All plays were creatively — crafted and well directed. Congratulations
to the hard work of the cast, crewmembers, and senior directors for
giving the UD community a display of the multitude of talent in the
drama department.
