Board selects Thomas W. Keefe as next president

Managing Editor
The University of Dallas board of
trustees announced on Monday
its selection of Thomas W. Keefe,
J.D., as UD's news president. Keefe is
scheduled to assume the presidency on
March 1, 2010.
"We are pleased to have Tom Keefe
join us as the eighth president of the
University," said O.D. Cruse, chairman
of the University's board of trustees, in a
press release. "Tom's background and his
enthusiastic endorsement of our Catholic
identity, our values, vision and mission
provide us with an exciting leader
consistent with our recognized acclaim as
a leader of liberal learning and a model of
ethical practiced-based [sic] professional
education."
"From the very beginning, we have
said that our principal need was two-
fold: one, to embrace a much larger
outside constituency and therefore get
larger and much deserved recognition
for the University, and then secondly,
to raise funds for the University," Cruse
said in an interview with The University
News. "[Keefe] was far and away the most
qualified person to do that."
Cruse also commented on his
satisfaction that UD is able to hire a
president who can focus on fundraising,
while Dr. Bill Berry, the provost, focuses
on leading the academic side of the
University. "It's a combination of two
things. One, 50 plus years ... of increased
recognition of our academic excellence
... and then ... you add Bill Berry on top
of that, and for the first time, we had the
luxury to go look for someone who could
focus on our outside world and focus on
fundraising."
The Student Government Executive
Council submitted a letter to Cruse
recommending Keefe's selection on
Dec. 3. "Personally, I'm excited that
Thomas Keefe is coming on as UD's next
president," Justin Dugyon, SG president,
said. "We were confident that both his
impressive career achievements as well
as his stated commitment to UD's core
values would weigh heavily in the board's
ultimate decision."

The numbers are finally in. Charity
Week 2009 netted $24,571.09,
according to Renee Talamantez,
director of Student Activities. This total
greatly exceeded the original fundraising
goal of $17,700. The North Texas Food
Bank will receive $6,000. Vogel Alcove
will receive $5,000. Project Ultrasound
will receive $4,000. St. jude Children's
Hospital, the Low Birth Weight Clinic and
the Northwest Center will each receive
$2,000, leaving $3,571.09 to be put
towards building next year's jail.
Juniors Ben Russo and Deborah
Kunkel, this year's Charity Week chairs,
were both pleased with the results. "I'm
really happy, actually, because as far as
I can tell, that is the most that we, on
record, have raised," Russo said.
"We're just really grateful that so
many UD students helped out so much,"
said Kunkel. "The generosity of the student
body was so impressive."
