The University News
Player o the Week: Jim Norton
Philip Carkhuff
Sports Editor
Four-year letter-winner and
basketball team player
Jim Norton has not rested
on last year's accomplishments,
when he was named second-
team All-Independent and led
UD with 349 points. Thus
far, the senior guard is leading
the team in minutes and has
averaged 17.3 points-per-
game, including a season-
high 31-point effort against
Huntingdon College. When
talking about the season, it's
very clear - the man just loves
to play.
PC: Why did you come to
the University of Dallas?
JN: I wasn't really planning
on coming here, but then i
started getting emails about
the business program and the
five-year master's degree plan.
The accounting program looked
good to me. I started contacting
coach at the same time, and I
liked the team.
PC: Why do you love
basketball?
JN: It's the most exciting
sport to watch and just fun to
play. It's a sport that requires
one of the fullest combinations
of athleticism, skill and
conditioning.
PC: You and the rest of the
team are some of the hardest
workers out of all UD athletics.
What's the motivation for all of
the extra workouts in addition to
pushing yourself in practice?
JN: Just knowing that I
have the ability to play and can
keep playing right now at the
collegiate level. It's the goal of
being able to have a winning
season. The team gets you
through it, too.
PC: Th is is your last season
at UD. What do you want to
get out of it as a senior?
JN : A 20-win season, which
I think we can do, and then the
national tournament. To win
there would be awesome.
PC: It seems like the team
has had good fan support so far.
Why would you encourage UD
to keep coming out for games?
JN: They're going to have
a good time. We have a good
team, so our games will be
exciting. Everyone who I've
talked to who has come has said
they've had a great time.
PC: If you could take any
player, past or present, in a
game on one-on-one, who
would it be?
JN: I'd really like to play
against Larry Bird. I'd like to see
him hit some crazy shots right in
my face just for the fun of it.

Baseball season heats up
David Rettinger
Contributing Writer
The cold, rain and ice of
winter are gone. Spring is
here, and with it comes
all the beauty that this season
yields such as flowers, woodland
critters frolicking around campus
and love in the air. But I, being a
red-blooded American man, raised
on sports and country music, see
a different kind of beauty to the
spring. The beauty of spring is
the return of America's favorite
pastime to the University of Dallas
campus.
Coming off of a23-15-1 record,
the UD baseball team is looking
not only to improve their record
but also to uphold the annual
tradition of winning. Hie team this
year will have to replace a bevy
of talent, including four seniors
and two players who transferred,
but the team is more than well-
equipped to handle this challenge.
Leading the team this year will be
senior Sean McSheft'ery and junior
pitcher and The University News
sports editor Phil Carkhuff.
McSheffery has been a
mainstay at second base and the
designated hitter position since his
arrival at UD and provides valuable
experience to the roster. Carkhuff,
who last year was the Division III
Independent Pitcher of the Year
and Division III Independent
All-First Team award winner,
brings not only his tremendous
skill to the team but also a hard-
working and winning mentality.
After a 2009 season of non-
stop away games, this year's team
will play 26 of their 40 games
at home. So take a break from
the works of Dante and Plato
and come out to the baseball
field to stimulate your mind in a
completely different way or just to
be loud and cheer. Whatever you
decide, this will be a great year and
with a jam-packed student section,
our baseball team will surely not
disappoint. The first game of the
season is a double-header against
the Hendrix College Warriors on
Feb. 6 starting at noon.
