whether there was a difference between
a person who studies science as a
Catholic as compared to scientists of
different faiths. Touching on Darwin and
evolution, Brown ultimately concluded
that there is no difference, as all "must
interact intellectually and move across
the world" and apply logic to reality to
explore and comprehend. She noted the
mutual respect the science departments
have for all others as all participate in the
freedom of teaching and "willingness to
learn," and that "no one of us can have
all the answers."
Having not attended a Catholic
university himself, the fourth and
final panelist gave what he called "an
outsider's global perspective." John Allen
Jr. is the senior correspondent for the
National Catholic Reporter and CNN's
senior Vatican analyst. Laboring outside
of the sphere of academia, Allen's
address took on a more flamboyant style
and faced the facts of the modern world
rather than delving into intellectual and

theological concepts.
Directing his discourse toward
what affects the church and not just the
university, Allen talked extensively about
the geographical complications that will
come as the 21 st century progresses and
the church is influenced increasingly
by the global south. He stressed that it
is vital for the church not to be defined
by a tension about "Catholic identity"
and the assertion of it and the division
between two classes of Catholics: those
who are Catholic "in name only" and the
"...angry, distorted Catholic Taliban."
Alien said that the "hunger for an
identity" must be fed by the Catholic
U.S. and must take on a "global sense,"
so that the concerns of the global
south and north will be synthesized.
Recognizing this to be a "complicated
business," Allen said that it all must
begin with wisdom.
The panelists took questions and
comments from the audience. Dr. Susan
Hanssen of the history department
pointed out the inappropriateness of
the term "Taliban Catholic" to a set
of people who in fact do not act as
suicide bombers or otherwise violent
witnesses.
Many audience members seemed
to agree with Hanssen, applauding her
comments. She observed that young
people's "hunger for clarity" is not new
and that the idea of diversity and the
Catholic university's mission to address
the needs that come with it is also not a
new idea. What must be done, rather, is
to "bring the one truth of God and who
we are and what God is," since there is
no "diversity of faith."
Allen responded that his label was
meant to be "deliberately provocative,"
and was meant not to represent real
people but to capture a psychological
mentality that Farreil mentions in
his speech as exuding "... close-
mindedness, judgmentalism, suspicion,"
Allen responded by saying the faithful
should focus on returning to the work
of synthesis, though it is a "challenge to
proclaim the faith in the changing face
(of the Church)," and with "bewildering
diversity."
Another member of the audience
asked for confirmation of the university's
purpose to "form the soul and intellect
... as a Catholic hospital for the soul."
Allen answered that it is the task of
Catholics to address external synthesis
and internal formation of the soul at the
same time. In the first place, one must
be "rooted in a crystal clear sense of
what is distinctly Catholic ... have to be
clear first of who you are ... add to it
a healthy sense of global perspective,"
and this will result in a "healthy formula
for effective Catholicism."
