Constitution day celebrates America's Founding

U
Blest with
victory and
peace, may
the heav'n
rescued land praise the
power that hath made and
preserved us a nation,"
says the fourth verse of the
Star-Spangled Banner sung
Sunday at the University
of Dallas' 35th Annual
Constitution Day. Students,
alumni, professors
and families alike did
just that, celebrating
Constitution Day through
prayer, prose and song.
Upon walking in, guests
were greeted by U.S. and
Texas flags, framing the
podium from which the
master of ceremonies and
politics professor Dr. Leo
Paul de Alvarez welcomed
the crowd. Upstairs Haggar
dining room was full, with
only a handful of people
in the overflow seating.
Guests sported everything
from a tricorn to patriotic
ties to red, white and
blue onesies worn by the
babies in attendance.
The evening began with
the Pledge of Allegiance
and all four verses of the
National Anthem. The
catered BBQ dinner and
cash bar were a success,
though upperclassmen
lamented the absence of
the popular open bar from
previous years. Despite
this, senior Daniel Arevalo
commented, "Constitution
Day is the best day ever!
It would make anybody
want to study politics."
Associate politics
professor Dr. Richard
Dougherty delivered the
address entitled, "The
Constitution Goes to War:
Or Does It?" He focused on
the role of the presidency
and its expanded powers
throughout history during
wartime, peace and times
of conflict or undeclared
war. Citing multiple court
cases, historical examples
and the Federalist Papers,
Dougherty raised more
questions than provided
answers in an effort
to provoke thought.
He closed with a
quote from Alexis de
Tocqueville, saying "There
is no long war that does
not put freedom at great
risk in a democratic
country . . . War does not
always give democratic
peoples over to military
government; but it cannot
fail to increase immensely

the prerogatives of
civil government."
The evening ended
with spirited voices and
piano music that raised
in the audience a sense
of passion similar to
that which moved the
Founders, according to de
Alvarez. UD's geographic
diversity became apparent
through the emphatic
choruses of "in Dixieland
I'll take my stand, to live
and die in Dixie!" from the
Southern students. The
Yankees in the audience
answered with an equally
emphatic rendition of "the
Union forever, Hurrah,
boys, hurrah! Down with
the traitors!" The tension
at least until next
year's celebration - was
soon assuaged as voices
reunited for the Battle
Hymn of the Republic.
