Old Mill burns to the ground, students rejoice
Michelle Bauman

The apartment complex
that has traditionally
housed the majority
of University of Dallas
seniors was destroyed in a fire
last weekend, leaving hundreds of
students homeless and happy.
Flames were first noticed at
Tower Village Apartments, more
commonly known among students
as "Old Mill," just after midnight
on Sunday. A miscommunication
with the fire department prevented
fire trucks from arriving for several
hours. By the time they appeared on
the scene, the apartment complex
had become a pile of ash-covered
debris.
Although there have been
no reports of injury, all of the
residents of the complex lost
their apartments in the fire. But
despite the destruction of all their

belongings, the students say they
are happy with the situation.
Celebratory shouts could be
heard as students evacuated their
apartments early Sunday morning.
"I'm so happy," said one
student. "No more cockroaches
and dripping faucets, no more poor
insulation and uneven floors."
"I've been praying for months
that Old Mill would miraculously
sink into the ground," said another
student. "My prayers have been
answered."
Amid strong student reaction,
one group of seniors remained
noticeably quiet. The fire and
its aftermath did not seem to
be observed by the psychology
majors, most of whom were too
busy working on their thesis
revisions to notice a change in their
surroundings. Several psychology
students were sighted amid piles

New Hall to be named, finally!
Students invited to enter
'Name The New Hall' competition
Gabbi Chee
That Girl who Runs the Newspaper
The New Hall - known
in some circles as New
Residence Hall, TNH or
NRH - has remained
unnamed since its opening last
January. That's about to change.
University of Dallas students are
invited to sign up to enter the
"Name The New Hall" competition,
to be held at the end of this month.
Students who would like to
have a shot at naming the hall
will have to successfully complete
the challenge of navigating a set
course through the New Hall's
eight wings and parking garage in
less than eight minutes. Running
in the hallways will be prohibited
during the competition, and
Resident Assistants will be on hand
to enforce that rule. Elevators will
also be off limits. "I'll admit that
is a pretty formidable challenge,
especially with the no-running
rule. I'm going to have to figure
out a strategy, probably do some
trial runs - uh, walks - in my spare
time," said one student.
Competitors will not be given
the advantage of all-access key
cards, said one competition
official. They therefore will need to
coordinate with friends who live in
wings the competitors can't access
by themselves to open the door to
that wing. When told that not all
students necessarily know people
n the New Hall, and that the
contest doesn't really seem fair,
the competition official shrugged
and said, "That's not my problem.
The winner of the "Name The
New Hall" competition will have
to submit his or her choice to
top University officials for final
approval. It is suggested that
contestants name the hall after
a saint or a prominent historical
figure. Naming the hall after one's
friends, self, pet or a fictional
character will not be permitted,
said a representative for the
administration.
Concern over the hall's lack of
a name has recently become more
pressing as officials have realized
that other new halls may need to
be constructed as the University
continues to grow. "We'd like to
have the New Hall's current 'name'
at our disposal for the future.
Because The New Hall IT doesn't
really roll off your tongue so well
and would just be confusing," said
another University representative.
