Administrators speak at SG forum
by Meghan Kuckelman
News Editor
The new business college, Ex Corde
Ecclesiae, and campus diversity were all
discussed at last Wednesday's SG forum
with the administration. Administrators
present were president Monsignor Milam
Joseph; provost Dr. Tom Lindsay; Dr. Fred
Zuker, dean of enrollment and student life;
Robert Galecke, vice president of finance
and administration; and Ilene Stern, vice
president of institutional advancement.
The university president opened the fo-
rum speaking about three specific changes
at UD. He first announced the initiation of
the SG president and the chairman of the
Faculty Senate into the board of trustees as
guests who will sit in on meetings.
Joseph then stressed the importance of
the improving of the Maher athletic com-
plex.
"We're continuing to move forward, but
not at a fast a pace as I'd like, on the reno-
vation and expansion of the Maher Com-
plex," he said.
Joseph said the current athletic/physical
facilities are an embarrassment to the uni-
versity and that Church documents call for
education of the whole person, mind, soul
and body.
"Young men and women are coming
from high schools and neighborhoods and
gyms, and we're not fulfilling their need to
take care of their bodies," he said.
The project calls for $2 million in funds,
$913,000 of which have already been
raised. Joseph said feels so strongly about
this project that he has pledged $30,000 of
his own money.
The third issue, and main topic of dis-
cussion for the forum, was the new college
of business. Joseph said that the Board of
Trustees voted unanimously to establish the
college June 11, but that the decision had

SG president Mark Villanueva and Fac-
ulty Senate chairman Dr. David Higgins at-
tended their first board of trustees meeting
Thursday as "invited guests" of the board,
a position that allows them to give their
input at the meetings, though they cannot
vote.
"Technically, I can comment on anything
they're discussing," Villanueva said.
Villanueva said that the Faculty Senate
chairman and SG president may become
permanent ex-otficio members in the fu-
ture, though the change in title would not
significantly change what they can do.
Villanueva said his presence at the meet-
ings is significant in itself.
"Just my presence being there says a lot.
It says that they trust and respect the stu-
dents," he said.

Freshman Stephen Wauck dives for a save on the volleyball courts at the RHA Luau sponsored by Madonna,
Teresa, and Catherine last Saturday. About 200 students attended to play volleyball, spin hula hoops, and eat the
1000 donated hamburgers. The Larry Mitnaul project closed the evening, featuring several surprise "guest ap-
pearances" from students with guitars.
Administrator, artist hired as Rome campus director
by Janet Hendrickson
Editor in Chief
A former vice director for the Univer-
sity of Washington Rome Center and artist
has been hired as the director of the UD
Rome campus.
Alison Ly tie Mencobello, who has lived
in Rome for more than ten years, will be-
gin part time at Due Santi next Wednesday
to phase in before current director Dr.
Wayne Ambler leaves in December, Rob-
ert Galecke, vice president of finance and
administration, said.
Mencobello will be responsible for all
financial, physical plant, and administra-
tive matters on campus and for the Rome
student life stalf. She will also provide
support to the Rome program director, a
UD faculty member who will head the aca-
demic and student life aspects of student
life program.
One of Mencobello's goals is to build
bond she already sees between the Irving
and Rome campuses.
"Already there's such a strong feeling
between the two campuses, I hope to
strengthen that even more," she said.
Mencobello worked at the University
of Washington Rome Center from 1989
to 1999, first as assistant to the director
and then vice director, having extensive
responsibilities in both academic and ad-
ministrative matters. From 2001 to 2002,
she taught art at the Castelli International
School and most recently was associate
coordinator of international events of the
Rhode Island School of Design, where she
received her Bachelor of Fine Arts and
was a sculpture teaching assistant.
Mencobello also received her Master of
Science in Education from the Bank Street
College of Education.
In addition, Mencobello has served as
an artistic assistant at the Peggy
Guggenheim Foundation in Venice and
taught as a private art instructor in Rome
since 1990. Her art has been exhibited at
shows both in the United States and Rome.
The new director first learned about
UD's Rome program 10 years ago and has
gotten to know past director s through her
job at the University of Washington.
"What happens with me and an aca-
demic institution is it doesn't take me long
to read what the home campus mission is
for overseas institutions," she said.
Mencobello now lives in the Santa Maria
delle Mole neighborhood, just three kilo-
meters away from the Rome campus, with
her Roman husband and two children.
Dr. Frank Doe, dean of Constantin Col-
lege, said he hopes to choose a Rome pro-
gram director from a "short list" in the next
two weeks. Mencobello and the Rome pro-
gram director will split the duties of
Ambler.
Galecke said, "We really didn't have
anyone that we felt was qualified to do the
whole job," adding later, "Wayne was
unique."
The program director advertisement
asked for a tenured professor with at least
one year of experience on the Rome cam-
pus. The new program director will start
in the fall, with an interim director serving
in spring.
