How well do we measure up
Exhibit breaks out from the seclusion of UD's Art Village
by Lucia Arbery
Contributing Writer
Every year, way down in the
Art Village, the senior art ma-
jors gather their creative and or-
ganizational powers and curate
a gallery show. This year, after
much deliberation and discus-
sion about new ideas for a show,
the decision was made to keep
with a tradition begun three
years ago and host an invita-
tional show with other seniors
from North Texas" private uni-
versities. Senior art majors from
Austin College, Texas Christian
University, and Southern Meth-
odist University were invited to
submit one piece to the show, as
were the UD's art majors. The
purpose of this type of show is
to see, in a sense, what aspiring
artists are up against at these
other universities. Being at a
small, private university can
very often be a little too secluded
and students graduate never
knowing what their peers else-
where have been doing for the
past four years.
How Do You Measure Up? 3
was designed to create a forum
for conversation between stu-
dents who may not have had the
opportunity otherwise and to al-
low students actually to see each
other's work. Ideally, the show
works as a small step towards
creating a community of
young artists who

have a desire to help influence
and encourage each other dur-
ing this pressure-filled year.
With the guidance of sculp-
ture professor Cam Schoepp,
UD's senior art majors:
Jonathon Cross, Tori Kaspereit,
Moirin Reynolds, Elisa
Choeffel, Bethany Lee, Laura
Montoya, Veronica Dye, and
Lucia Arbery spent eight long
hours installing the
show Feb. 28, hang-
ing each piece ac-
cording to specific
instructions given
by the invited partici-
pants.
They decided where to position
walls, what work went best to-
gether, and how to light each
piece. The result was an elegant
space housing more than thirty
works of art.
There are playful works like
Giraffasaunis - a giant, yellow
felt dinosaur-looking creature
atop an Astroturf bed, and
Jonathan Cross's Weeds - hand-
made grasses and flowers subtly
stuck in various cracks dirough-
out the gallery. The diptych of
two photographs by TCU's Matt
Howthorne titled Blue Wall and
Red Door worked wonderfully
with a pristine fashion-style
photo. Serene, done by SMU's
Meredith Witte. UD's Moirm
Reynold's submitted a photogra-
phy piece as well, titled
by TCU's Amanda S. Harvey.
Repitition Variation 1 which
was a childlike play of mechani-
cal imagery. More traditional
pieces also were submitted -
various figure paintings and one
landscape painting. Two figure
paintings that are sure to get a
lot of attention for their absur-
dity are Crime Scene by Mariya
Dimon, which is a beautifully
painted depiction of a man ly-
ing dead, and naked, in front of
an open refrigerator in which a
chair has been shoved, and Per-
formance - Raissa by UD
painter Veronica Dye, depicting
a girl lying on the ground be-
decked in flying goggles and
wrapped in rope. Ram en
noodles and grapes are strewn
about her. Perhaps one of the
most haunting pieces in the
show is done by SMU's
Danielle Hueys, titled Family
Portraits - 1985. It is a large
collage of family photographs
all taken from the same sitting,
each picture being only slightly
different than the others and all
arranged in an orderly grid. The
viewer is so inundated with the
image of this family that attrac-
tion to the piece is unavoidable.
Upon close inspection of the
piece, the viewer realizes that in-
serted subtly in one of the rows,
is a picture of the wedding of
Princess Diana and Prince
Charles One wonders at all of
the implications of the work.
Nearly all of the work in How
Do You Measure Up? 3 reflects
students who are trying to
clearly articulate rich, playful,
and graceful ideas through origi-
nal work. The show is testament
to young people on the hopeful
cusp of entering the art world,
wherever and whatever that may
be.
The reception for How Did
You Measure UP?3 was held
Mar. 1. The show will be on
display until Mar. 20.
