to help in the area of support systems
by teaching students to choose their
friends wisely so they can build a sup-
port system and also how to be self
sufficient for times when they find
themselves without reliable support.
This research project has given me a
new awareness and a deeper under-
standing of where my students are
coming from and what I can do to help
them get where they want to go.
Implications
The information which was gained
from this project has led me to an
awareness of the resources which my
students are lacking and the impact
that has on their choices. I intend to
use strategies from several different
sources to model and develop behav-
ior in my students that will provide
them with opportunities to meet their
goals and potential.
We will use Glasser's Control Theory
in the Classroom to guide my students
into a realization that we all make our
own choices. They must understand
the needs that drive people and that
our motivation comes from within.
We will use Positive Discipline in the
Classroom by Jane Nelsen, Lynn Lott
and H. Stephen Glenn to set up effec-
tive weekly class meetings. Students
need to feel like the class is theirs and
that they have input. Meetings will
help solve problems and make deci-
sions about class events. The students
will have to work as a team and build
a support system within the class.
We will use The One Minute Teacher
by Spencer and Constance Johnson to
facilitate goal making and positive
self-talk. Students need to have an
opportunity to make daily goals and
assess their progress toward those
goals.to structure lessons and projects. Stu-
dents will learn different critical think-
ing and self-regulating behaviors to
assist them academically and socially.
We will use various strategies, which
have been designed or collected by Dr.
Ruby K. Payne. These will help stu-
dents build cognitive strategies so that
they may meet with more success in
the academic world.
We will continue to have a commu-
nity service project as part of our cur-
riculum. Facilitating my students in a
project of their choice which benefits
the community brings their attention
to a number of adults who can serve
as positive role models.
I will make an effort to get more of
my students involved in the mentoring
programs which are available to us
through Communities in Schools.
These include individual mentors and
group mentoring situations.
I will utilize our adopt-a-unit from
Fort Hood. Soldiers are sent in to help
in the classroom. They will work one-
on-one with students on academic
tasks while modeling appropriate be-
haviors (positive self talk, critical
thinking to make wise choices, etc.).
I will plan events to help parents be-
come more involved in their child's
academic efforts. Parents are welcome
in the classroom anytime; however,
special activities will be scheduled
once a month.
Continuing Efforts
Throughout the upcoming school year
the participants will be monitored and
strategies will be adjusted where
needed.
Further research will be done regard-
ing programs and strategies which
have successfully provided role mod-This research project

awareness and a

are coming from and
