First Elementary School Fritch, 1935
in the hands of the courts. The energy crisis of the
early seventies fostered increased gas and oil activity,
which in turn encouraged the city's population to
increase to 2,200 in 1978.
Fritch is located in southwest Hutchinson County,
between three of Lake Meredith's eight recreation
areas: Sanford-Yake, Fritch Fortress, and Alibates
National Monument. State Route 136 bisects the city
and connects with Secondary Road 3189, east of the
city. Fritch is within commuting distance of Amarillo
(35 miles) and 12 miles from Borger. The Alibates .
National Monument is to preserve and provide for FritchityHall
public use, the flint quarries of the High Plains prehistoric
cultures. It is the only area in the Texas Pan

handle set aside to conserve the remains of the
Plains Village Indian Culture. The monument is
located in northeastern Potter County, close to
Fritch. It presently covers 92 acres, and to date has
limited development. i
Fritch has approximately 805 acres of land inside
the city limits, plus 35 acres that did belong to the
railroad, annexed a corridor road to connect the
Double Diamond Estates housing area, Saga Mesa, First Firetruck Fritch,1963
not connected with city utilities, Ponderosa, and
Arroyo Verde.
Pioneer Natural Gas Company has 865 meters in
city limits and 454 meters outside city limits. The City
has 854 water meters (active) inside city limits, and
140 meters outside city limits. There are personal
water wells that people have dug in and around
Fritch.
Fritch is a city which has discovered the "acres of
diamonds" in its own backyard.I U I
