Jerseyville March 1st 1864 6z AM I failed to get my letter in yesterdays mail + im glad of it for I recd a letter from Sam Thornhill + can give the itims. He wrote from Firanklin ky where he is at work. He still lives with At Nancy + all were well. At Nancys is the only farm not turned out about there + most of her timber is cut down Antony is still with her Sam wrote 25th in answer to mine of the 21st. At Nilla + Sis were at Franklin on the 24th. All well. Jim + Sally are well + Jim is doing a big grinding but At Nissa was giving him mutch trouble about the guardeanship of her youngest boy. Add Nimmo was at home + likely to stay there 2 weeks ago. Addine has a new baby. Edd Ireland had got home from the second Term + confirmed what you heard. Fra= uhs lefts hand is off. Dicks Regiment is guarding bridges (p. 2) Sam is not mutch Rebel not half as bad as Pheby Potts. Brown told me that Emberson (Bett Wilsons husband) is a union man but by virtue of owning over 600 cattle he was exempt from military duty up to the time Brown left. 600 cattle 20 negroes + preaching the gospile exempted men from the service. A friend of mine (Tom Austin) being a union man + having no other means of exemption had gone into the min- istry + saved himself. Brown could ever tell me about my old spy glass. Emberson still has it. Brown knew but one of the 42 Union men hung there. His name was Leach. I knew him + if they hung no better men than him Texas was not mutch damaged. Still I hate to hear of any one being hung for their Union ism. Jamie is geting to be a perfect nuesance. there since hunting X00%Og$ has topped. Deer are plenty + gentle almost as pets + wolves were troublesome. C B Moore I've written a long letter to Jo. S Wallace this morning

Letter from Charles Moore to an unidentified person discussing family matters and news. He also writes about the exemptions a person could have to get out of compulsory military service in the south: owning 600 cattle, owning 20 slaves, or being in the ministry. He mentions a Unionist friend who escaped service via the latter. He states that 42 men have been hanged for their Union sympathies.
