This class delves into the
twisted world of cult violence,
from the Manson family and
the Jonestown massacre to
the Dionysian cult of ancient
Greece.
"Particularly we talk about
serial homicide and quite a bit
about the psychopathology of
what makes a serial killer," said
Soraya Kawucha of the crim-
inal justice faculty and a retired
police officer from the Orange
County sheriff's department,
"Some individuals may just
use serial homicide to express
violence and others use gang or
cult behavior to express it."
Kawucha was born and raised
in Los Angeles, where gang
violence caught her interest. Her
experience in the field led her
to teach a class on the matter
of excessive violence in our
society.
Violence in America is a contin-
ually evolving subject. Up-to-date
research is constantly used in the
field to better understand crim-
inal violence of various types,
Kawucha said. Because of this,
the class will continue to main-
tain student intrigue and will
never become static.
