in this because it keeps afresh in this country
memories of thle men and women of the heroic
times of our war that ouglht not to perishl.
(Appla use.) I regret tllhat it could be found
in the heart of any one to say that the sacrifices
of the wonen of the N orth or South in
the time of war should have been forgotten.
(Applause.) I tell you that the spirit of the
departed men of this country when they
placed arms in the hands of their sons, and of
tle women \who, with their own delicate
hands and with their eyes bathed in tears,
made tl)e flag and gave it into tle keeping of
their sons, saying, 'Go, my boy, carry this
flag wlhoere honor bids, and come back witli it
or upon it,' ought not to be forgotten. (Applause.)
" We are charged witl preserving and
maintaining free institutions. Is there a man

to forget them. Then you do a serv'ic
to your country and justice to your ownl
feelings of virtue when the mothers of to-day
eadt their little children and watch thenl
trew flowers around tie graves of fallen hleoes

Mothers whose sons yieldeld up their lives in

Whether in shedding tears over tlie remains
of the gallant Ellsworthl; or whether we hear

the army of tle republic on the field of
Gettysburg. Lincoln stands tlhe same, a philoMopher,
