[Mrs. Clara Mae Davison]

Description:

An Entry in Weslaco's annual "Birthday Party" fashion show. Organized by the Chamber of Commerce to highlight the fruit and vegetables grown in the Rio Grande Valley, area citizens created and modeled clothing made from local fruit, vegetables, and flowers. This winning ensemble is called a "landlubbers's outfit" especially popular with schoolgirls because of its simplicity. Blouse was made of the inner skin of white grapefruit, cut in diamond-shaped pieces; waistcoat of red poinsettia petals, and skirt in inch-square pieces of eggplant. Buttons on the costume were made of lacquered papaya seeds, and her handbag was of eggplant. Inner skin of grapefruit formed a soft, pliable material for the blouse. Two-thousand one-inch pieces of eggplant were cut from 36 grapefruits and 36 poinsetta petals were used. Total cost was $6; time required to make was 262 hours.
