The new high school building occupies an entire block of
ground, bcj'und by North Kansas, North Campbell, Arizona and Nevada
streets. The electric car line will run Within three blocks of this
school asjsoon as the tracks can be laid. Thd edifice consists of
three stories and contains 1G rooms. The, material is brick and the
architectural design is attractive and convenient. On the ground
door three rooms are devoted to the department of physical science;
the other [three supply closets and boiler space. Fve rooms in each
o£ the remaining stories are assigned to the usual high school classes.
The Income for the public schools;of El Paso for the current
year will be a little over $50,000, of which amount $13,500 will come
from the jstate and about $37,000 from the city. This enables the
board of education to pay liberal salarlesj and thereby to secure
teachers I of experience, capacity and attainments. This they have
done, and; the public schools here are to be commended for the per-
sonnel of,the faculty even more than upon the excellence of their
material accessories. !

El Pasoans no less than the outside world look with wonder
on the marvelous growth of the city in trie last three years, not the
least marvelous feature being that it went steadily and evenly on.
Architect, .buildpr and mechanic had all that they could do, and no
one needed to go without work. In thirty-six months, the exchange
of real estate has run^up ijito many millions, while the permits for
building have exceeded 1000, calling for an outlay of £bout $2,000,000
more. ; ■ ' \ I
The opinion seems Incontrovertible that never has El Paso
had such imagnificent prospects as those which cluster about her to-
day, and .that^her growth in the Immediate future will dwarf into
comparative Insignificance^ the astonishing progress of the last few
years. _: '
. With all her nearly 100 hotels and lodging houses, and with
all the rented rooms. in private families, and despite the immense
amount of building which has taken place, room and residence rents
have not declined, but are higher today than they were four years ago.
To get good rooms well In is almost Impossible, while to secure a house
one must needs, rent it nearly as soon as the foundations are laid,
or-else must wMt for weeks till some house becomes vacant by the
tenant moving .into another just completed. Fifteen dollars, $20 or
even $25, are not considered high per month for two furnished rooms,
while $5 : for each room is the customary price for unfurnished
