Jurisdiction of Matagorda^
The AynntaRiento of this Jurisdiction on be-
half of their Constituents, again are imperiously called upon to pre-
sent themselves in the most respectful manner and with the highest
consideration before your honorable ^ody-
In the Memorial already forwarded under date of the 17th May,
this Ayuntamlento expressed their feelings and wishes as respected the
confinement of their fellow-citizen Colonel Stephen F. Austin, but
were not at that time acquainted with the extent of his sufferings,
nor the grounds upon which his arrest and confinement were based- and
Indeed even at this moment are only advised through popular rthaor-
that an intention on his part to dismember Texas from the Confedera-
tion was the cause* It is not the province nor is it the wish of
this Ayuntamlento to a anticipate the views of the Government as
respects ^ol. Austins conduct^ nor can they confute calumny 6a vin-
dicate innocence where no specific Charges exist, they are there-
fore bound in the tlndlcation of this Gentleman to Suppose a charge
in order to K*wbt it- The supposition then is that ^ol. Austin has
been rendered obnoxious to the General Government in consequence of
Statements having been made against his fidelity to the union. With-
out entering into details it is sufficient to revert to the disor-
ganized state of the whole Mexican Nation during the year 1833, and
part of *53, and It can excite no surprize that its baneful effects
should have extended to our remote and inconspicuous Cojhony- It is
well known to the members of this Ayuntamlento, and they pledge them-
